President Eisenhower is in Augusta, Ga., for a golfing vaca tion, but he cannot shed his troubles. Hole No. 15 of the Augusta National Course confronts him every time he plays olf. The United Press White House correspondent went out to try to find out why No. 15 plagues the President so much. Read it and weep. By MERRIMAN SMITH United Press White House Writer Augusta, Ga. (U.R) What does President Eisenhower wor ry about? Formosa? The Demo cratic National Committee? The budget? Sure. But, as of today, he has a trouble large enough to wipe out all those things from his mind temporarily. It is hole No. 15 on the Augusta National Course. It is this hole, says Mr. Eisen hower, that almost invariably threatens to make him blow his top. Not the 13th where Sam Snead hacked a ball almost in two during the Master's Tour nament here last week and wound up with a horrendous 8. For the President the 15th is the jinx hole. It is 505 yards of torture and frustration. . Keeps Score Secret And how do I know that? Be cause I stood on the 15th tee, peered into the valley of death, armed with nothing but some golf clubs and set out to see if that par 5 is as tough as the President says. Mr. Eisenhower has, on rare occasions, shot No. 15 in as few as six strokes. But frequently when he comes out of that grim vale there is a discreet silence about his score. Well, let's face It. I shot a 14. I blame it jointly on the fiend who designed hole No. 15 and Lininger Low Bidder On Paving Projects Portland (U.R) M. C. The projects were: Paving .27 of a mile of Main st. in Talent, with the low bid $11,837. Paving .27 of a mile of First st. in Phoenix, with the low bid $11,241. A crisp five iron carried the green, carried and bounced into the pond beyond. I dropped an other ball, took a penalty stroke. I lined the approach shot up carefully and flubbed it. Then I hit the shot of the day. The ball went on the green. Well, it took four putts to get the ball in the cup. That gave me a total of 14. While Mr. Eisenhower is here, the Secret Service men refuse to allow the White House cor respondents to play the Augusta National Course. For that I say: Thank you, Mr. President.
