TRIBUTE TO DR. A reader who knows the late great Dr. Hobart Amory Hare justly chides me for what I said - here March lith about Dr Hare and his famous Text book of Ther apeutics. As the reader points out, to my embarrass ment and re gret, I quoted Dr. Brady the d i s t i n- quished physician and teacher out of context, which is a wretch ed thing to do. Believe it or not, I did not do so intentionally. In fact I thought I had quoted Dr. Hare fairly, un til I read the master copy of the article for March 14, titled: "Sir William Never Said It." May I please explain wnat happened? First I quoted this from Osier's Practice, 6th ed., 1906: this does not mean, how ever, that alcohol may not have value in the fever" (of pneu monia) "and I should be sorry to give up its use in the sev erer forms of enteric" (typhoid fever) "and pneumonia." I said I called that profession al quibbling, and that it remind ed me of the quibbling of an other famous authority, a con temporary of Osier, Dr. Hobart A. Hare. Then I said that in the 10th ed. of Hare's Textbook of Therapeautics 1904 he said: "The chief uses of alcohol are as a rapidly acting stimul ant in heart failure, surgical shock, fainting, snakebite. . . " That puzzled me, in view of what Hare said on the next page of his textbook and this is what I intended to quote but didn't: "Alcohol never acts as a true March Bond Sales Down, Quarter's Up Sales of U.S. savings bonds in Jackson county were lower last month than they were in March, 1954, but the total num ber sold this year is greater than the number sold by the same time last year. Morris Leonard Sr., county savings bond sale chairman, re ported that the value of bonds sold here in March was $101,935. compared to $105,553 in March, 1954.. But the quarterly totals are $300,880 for 1955 and $289, 669 for 1954. Thl nnartpp'c fnfal ronrcconfe 23.8 per cent of the quota as signed Jackson county for the year. Throughout the state, March i sales totaled $4,13,495, highest March sales total since 1945, compared to $3,367,045 last year. The quarterly total also was up this year, $13,270,880 c o m pared to $10,070,099 in 1954. This is 29.4 per cent of the state's quota. Family Owes Lives to Dog Nobody Wanted Roxbury, Mass. (U.R) Mem bers of the family of Dennis Freeman owe their lives to a mongrel dog nobody wanted. Freeman, who works for the Animal Rescue League, brought Squirt home in 1944. Recently, the dog was given the opportun ity to repay the Freemans for their kindness. When the oxygen in the Free man apartment was all but ex hausted from a heater, Squirt managed to awaken the Free mans in time for them to call for help. Though father, mother, son and daughter collapsed shortly after placing the call, firemen were able to revive them. i fliEIDO FOR E)LW Try fia I SHONTEX ROUTINE I for 30 days At druf, dtpt. tiere and beauty iHops la 39i ad $f .Siie Tuba d $1 Jart For Generous Trial Package Send 10c to Cover "Dept. If the dose is large enough to cause any appreciable change in the circulation, it is in the nature of depression rather than stimulation." When I asked Dr. Hare how come, he answered (I quote from his letter dated 9-21-'06: "It is conceivable that alcohol acts as a stimulant on other functions of which, as yet, we know very little, as, for exam ple, the ability of the body to resist infection. Scientifically alcohol does act as a depressant. Practically. . ." A dental ad Inquires, "Do False Teeth Rock, Slide or Slip?" QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Not in Minnesota Your English physiologist would not have found it so good to go out for a walk without an overcoat in Minne sota ... (A. J. W.) The psysiologist. Dr. Leonard Hill, said "It is good to go out and be braced by feeling cold and so im pelled to take vigorous exercise." He did not say, and I Co not argue, that it does anybody any good to suffer from extreme cold when an overcoat or other cover would keep one comfort able.
