Jeffers, dean emer itus of the school of forestry at the University of Idaho, will re sume work for the local office of the bureau of land manage ment this summer, E. K. Jeffers, who is expected to ar- Study of Feeding Habits of Chicks May Save Money Chicago (U.R) A University of Chicago psychologist doing research on the development of seeing ability in chickens un expectedly turned up a clue to their feeding habits that may save money for chick-raisers. The psychologist, E c k h a r d Hess, as part of his research gave chicks objects of definite colors, sizes and shapes. He found they had definite preferences. Nearly all chickens preferred to peck at something 1 orange or red among colors, al though a small minority prefer red blue. They also had prefer ences as to size and shape. There emerged a clue that a chick meal made up of objects following the pattern of color, size and shape shown in the ex periments increased the tend ency of chicks to peck. By peck ing more at the food, they gained weight faster. The University of Chicago re ports, discussing the experiment, said "it would seem from Hess' studies that almost a full week out of the usual 10 to 12 weeks needed to bring chicks to broiler size can be saved if the food is designed to suit their prefer ence. Talent Band Follies Scheduled Friday Talent The annual -Band Booster's follies, sponsored by Talent High school to raise trav eling money for the band, will be held at 8 p. m. tomorrow night at the school. Included on the variety pro gram is a barbershop quartet, The All Done Four, made up of Weyburn Kenyon, Freeman Ma son, Vaughn Quackenbush and Tom Carter. Dr. G. A. Dier dorff, with a ventriloquist act, and O. V. Goddard and Bill Keddie, who will give a Scotch bagpipe duet, also are on the program. Original songs by Helen Briley, old time fiddling by Estel Bingham and' Jack McCarlin, an Hawaiian dance, a banjo solo, acrobatic dance, and the Talent Hot Shots, a Dixie Land band, will also be featured. Stan Tiegs will be master of ceremonies. Proceeds from the follies will be used to pay travel ing expenses for the band when it accompanies athletic teams on trips. Glider Flight Over Alps Makes History Grenoble, France (U.R) Two French glider pilots have made history with flights over the snow-covered Alps into Italy, it was announced yesterday. The Aero Club du Dauphine, which made the announcement, said these were the first such flights ever completed over the treacherous mountains, some of which tower more' than 13,000 feet. The 23-year-old pilots, Jean Poncet and Jean-Louis Perrier, were launched here Monday morning. Rising winds carried them up to an altitude of 17,000 feet, a record for glider pilots in this region. Both pilots flew single-seaters and landed within 15 minutes of each other about five hours after takeoff. Bee Keeping Classes Start This Evening . The first of three classes of a training school sponsored by the Rogue River Valley Bee Keep er's association will be held be tween 8 and 10 p. m. tonight in Bigham hall on the Jackson county fair grounds. Tonight's session will feature fundamentals of bee keeping to acquaint inexperienced persons with bee keeping. Dr. W. P. Stevens of Oregon State college and Frank Kuoni, president of the association, made arrangements for the school. There is no enrollment fee, and the school is open to the public. Conflict Cited Considerable conflict concern ing grazing on logged areas ex ists between stock raisers and tree farmers in various parts of the state, Peterson said. Forest ers believe grass and stock graz ing are detrimental to establish ing a new tree crop, but stock men believe grazing is a good secondary use and that grass helps prevent soil erosion. Jackson county, Peterson pointed out, is in a zone be tween eastern Oregon, where grazing and thnbe,r growing are combined, and northwestern Ore gon, where they are not. In some Jackson county areas both uses can be carried on while in other sections it is undesirable. Jeffers started research on the project last summer, and pres ently is studying literature on the subject at Oregon State college. 6-oz.
