Mrs. George Goodrich Praised for Service To Blind in Red Cross Mrs. George Goodrich has re signed as chairman of the Red Cross committee which has been working with the blind, it was announced at a meeting of the local Red Cross chapter Thurs day. Mrs. John Day chairman of volunteer services, announced the resignation, and praised Mrs. Goodrich for her work which has resulted in the local chapter receiving national attention for its work with the blind. Mrs. Harry Poston has been named to succeed Mrs. Goodrich, Mrs. Day said. ; Six classes in first aid are now In progress in the county, with several more being formed in ihe next few weeks, it was re- West Germany Adds To Trucker Subsidy Berlin (U.R) The West Ger man government has voted ad ditional subsidies to truckers to pay the exorbitant highway taxes levied by the Communists In their pocketbook blockade of West Berlin. Confronted by prolonged Com munist haggling over the tolls, the government raised its subsi dies from $125,000 to $187,000 for West German truckers who supply most of Berlin's food on the 110-mile run through Com munist territory. This was in addition to a sub sidy of $250,000 already author ized by the West Berlin govern ment, a total of $437,500 in "taxes' the Communists said were needed to repair the high ways. The Communists warned again Friday that ratification of the Paris pacts to rearm West Ger many would oave "dangerous re sults" for West Berlin but they did not elaborate on the new threat. ported by Leroy Williams, first aid chairman. Mrs. Joseph Burba reported on the bloodmobile visit Wednes day which brought in 276 pints, or 3S more than the quota. It is the first time the quota has been exceeded in more than six months, she said. A new film, "Prescription for Life," telling the story, of how blood from blood donations is used, was shown. yra Physical Education Bill Passes House Salem (U.R) The House has followed the lead of the Sepate and passed a bill wiping out the statutory requirement J that Oregon schools provide phy sical education courses. The vote was 38 to 16. ' Rep. Wayne Giesy (R-Monroe) said the Legislature should not require the teaching of physical education any more than it does the teaching of mathematics or history. That should be left up to educators, he said. Salem (U.R) The House has passed and sent to the Sen ate a bill which sets forth grounds on which the State Rac ing Commission can deny dog or horse racing licenses. At pres ent the commission has author ity to deny such licenses but does not set forth reasons for which a license may be denied.
