4 TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Musicians7 Festival -Contest Opens Here Thursday Morning Student musicians from five counties will converge on Med ford High school for the annual southern Oregon music educat ors contest-festival, April 7, 8 and 9. About 2300 students are entered in the event according to I. A. -Mirick, contest-festival chairman. Bands, choruses and orches tras from high schools, junior high schools and a few elemen- Meeting Planned For YMCA Group Junior Stamp club of the YMCA will study Argentina at a meeting to be held in Room B Saturday, April 9. During re cent weeks the club has studied the stamps of Guatemala and Chile. Members learned that Guate mala is second largest Central American republic, and that Chile is called the "Shoestring Republic." Chile's history is closely tied up with the Spanish conquest and final liberation under San Martin and Bolivar of South America from Spain. Chile's liberator was Bernardo O'Hig gins, the "George Washiagton" of Chile and he was joined by Joe de San Martin, in the final battles to free Chile in 1817 anl 1818. Sat urday selected musicians from the participating schools are to combine forces in the large fes tival chorus, orchestra and band under the direction of three guest conductors. These festival groups will rehearse during the day and present an evening con cert as a grand finale to the contest-festival. Individual groups may per form for a rating or for criticism only. An added feature of this year's contest is the sight read ing event in which bands and orchestras will play one selec tion which they have not previ ously seen. This is also optional and will not affect the rating of a group that is performing for a 'rating. All performances of the three day music fest are open to the public and a nominal charge will be made. Easter Program Planned for PTA A program in keeping with the Easter season, will be presented Friday, April 8, at 2:30 p. m., at the monthly meeting of the Roosevelt Parent-Teacher asso ciation. Miss Verna Cingcade, Bible history teacher for the Medford schools and outlying areas, will demonstrate, with the Easter Story, how the Bible history stories are presented to the chil dren in her classes. CamD Fire Girls will have charge of the flag ceremony and the Triple Trio from tivst .Pres byterian church will sing Easter selections. Hostesses for the meeting will be the mothers of the pupils in the first grades. l . Wednesday. The prizes, furn ished by the Medford unit of the American Legion auxiliary, went to -Bill Hickey for highest total score, John Solheim, second, and Mike Dillon, third. Play that evening was for master points, and was in two sections. North-south winners, Section A, were Mrs. S. W. Alcorn and Roy Pruitt, 80 li, first; Mrs. B. B. Hughes and Mrs. L. S. Johnson, 69V2, second; Mrs. Alto Pruitt and Mrs. Roy Pruitt, 67, third. Ras mussen of Omaha, Neb., have left for California after having been guests here of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Rasmussen, 21 Ac orn way. The Rasmussens were joined in California by their grand daughter Miss Joyce Jensen, also of Omaha, who is a student at Stanford university, and the three continued to Pebble Beach for a vacation. The visitors attended the Ore gon Open golf tournament held at Rogue Valley Country club while they were here, and were honored at a number of small parties. Meeting Changed By PTA Council A meeting of Medford Coun cil of Parent-Teacher associa tions scheduled for Thursday, April 7, has been postponed until Thursday, April 14. Installation of officers will be held at that time and Mrs. Owen Kunkel will be installing officer. All chairmen are to take the annual reports of their commit tees to the meeting. New officers will be Mrs. Ro land Holmes, president; Mrs. Lou Cranston, vice-president; Mrs. J. J. Finnegan and Mrs. Golden Noble, ' junior vice-presidents; Mrs. Lawrence Crocker, secre tary; and Mrs. Austin Caldwell, treasurer. Amethyst Rebekahs Plan Session Tonight Under New Schedule Gold Hill Amethyst Re bekah lodge will meet tonight at 8 p. m. in the IOOF hall. This will be the first meeting under the new schedule of the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Phone 3-4922 At the BIGGER, BETTER Big Y Entrance on Hiway 99 Conference on Planned in Medford May 2 Monday, May 2, has been set as the date of a regional meeting on education for Jackson county, the meeting to be one of 22 in Oregon which will precede the governor's conference in June on this topic. Similar conferences will be, held in all 48 states and they will be followed by the White House conference on edu cation to be held in Washington, D. C. in November. The Jackson county meeting was planned at a session Mon day nignt attended by represen tatives of several county groups. It was decided that the local con ference would be both for dele gates and for anyone interested, it will be an evening session at Medford Senior High school with a keynote speaker followed by small group meetings. Attending Monday's meetings were Mrs. Herbert Seitz, presi dent of Medford chapter, Amer ican Association of University Women; Mrs. C. F. Conley, Ash land, president of the County Council of Parent-Teacher asso ciations; Alva Graham, faculty member from Southern Oregon college; the Rev. R. W. Hum of the Medford Ministerial associa tion; W. V. Deatherage, who represented the Democratic party; H. L. Carlton of Jackson County Pomona Grange; Fred M. Bruegger of the Jackson County Council on Children and Youth; Ron Gandee, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce; Mrs. Una B. Inch, county supervisor of rural schools; Mrs. Frank Bash, chairman of the Jackson county Republican party; Mrs. Maxine Smith, president of Jackson county unit, Oregon Educational association; Boyd Gibson, Jack son County Classroom Teachers' association; Leonard Mayfield, assistant superintendent of Med ford public schools.
