The proprietor would have to show why his operation was not a nuisance. Con rrpno T. Brown was one of nine members who attacked the measure. He said it allowed "uniustified heckling" of a leg itimate business by a few dis gruntled individuals. He sug gested the entire statute be re pealed. Sen. J. O. Johnson, Tigard, supported . the bill saying it would give small counties the same chance to abate nuisances that larger counties now have. The bill earlier had passed the House. On The Side By E. V. DURLING (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Referring to Irving Berlin I said he was born in New York City. He was born in Russia Was brought to New York at the age of 4. Incidentally, L Wolfe Gilbert, who wrote "Wait ing for the Robert E. Lee," was also born in Russia. He was brought to Philadelphia when a babe in arms. I. always think of Berlin as" a New Yorker and Gil bert as a Fhiladelphian. I con cede, however, it is not exactly rights It works both ways. Take Emil Jahnings, the film char acter' actor. I think of him as a German. Still Jannings was born in Brooklyn. His parents took him to Germany when he was 3 and he stayed there the rest of his life. Briefly To be eligible for member ship in the Bald Head Club of America a man must have bald spot at least three inches in diameter ... A good birth day song is "My Best to You,' written by Gene Willadsen and Isham Jones. It is much better than that corny, childish ditty "Happy Birthday to You." . . The Concatenated "Order of Hoo-Hoo is the name of a St. Louis lum berman's association." Longevity Women born under Virgo (August ZJ-faeptember ii) us ually live to ripe "old age. Or, so say the stargazers. They may be right. Mrs. Anna Petterson, Sunbury, Pa., 98; Mrs. Amanda Thomas, Shamokin, Pa., 95, and Mrs. Elizabeth Yust St. Clair, Pa., 90, were all born under the sign of Virgo and have the same birthday, September 14. Asides It was Sarah Bernhardt who said, "I always swore that if I ever married it would be sim ply to make yourself more popu lar with all men for I was never blind to the fact that men like a woman better for being an other man's property." . . Jerome Kern composed over one thou sand songs, the best of which in my opinion is "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." Get It Right The "stop" and "go" sign traf fic system was first used in this country in New York City, fifty- two years ago. The man respon sible was Alexander R. Piper, who in1903 was second deputy police commissioner of New York City in charge of traffic. Mr. Piper was not, however, the originator of the system. He had made a special trip to London to study police methods and handling of traffic there. He noted the "stop" and "go" traf fic system was being used at the five cross streets at the Mansion Housed London. In New York the "stop" and "go" system was first used at Broadway and Ca nal Streets. Naming Towns There is a town named Pa tricia, Texas. Also there is Lois, Texas; Ethel, Texas and Pene lope, Texas. There is even a Peggy, Texas. The Lone Star State has - secenty-eight towns bearing girls' names, more than any other State in the Union.
