Med Treasure COSTLY ANTIQUE CHAIR NOT It was one of the most uncom fortable chairs I had ever sat in, but I merely smiled. But there's a limit to what even a Gage can take. I found a pillow, with which to cushion matters. As I advanced to place it on the seat, the chair, to which I had paid no attention on first sitting down, seemed suddenly to take on the more pronounced aspects of the Iron Maiden. The piece was primarily a table and only secondarily a chair. The top of the table, round, and about ZV2 feet in diameter, was hinged on the two rear posts of the chair. It was raised now and sitting against the wall. What I had been sitting on was the table's second deck, a place to store things when the piece was a table, a place to sit when LANDSCAPE TURNS OUT TO It was a good enough looking landscape as such things go. When Jack told me where he .had bought it I recalled having een it before. "I suppose it was the frame as much' as the picture that caused you to fork over $35 for it," I said. Jack agreed that the frame was well worth half the price. Its overall dimensions were 28 inches by 23. It was of heavy gilt and gracefully done quite in keeping, now that I saw it in Jack's well-lighted study, with the vista of rolling hills that rose from the far side of a heat-, filled valley opposite the mouth of a live oak-studded arroyo down which one looked. "Just the same, though," I wnt on, "one would have to like STAMP DEALER MAKES A If you have any old postal cards around the house, hang onto them. They may have quite a value. Three or four years ago, Fred, a stamp dealer friend of mine, bought a sizable accumulation of stamps just in order to acquire a few items for which he had a ready market. The remainder he dumped into a drawer to. await examination later. Later didnt' arrive until last month , Chief among the items lie dis covered was a bundle of 10 'pos tal cards. The outside numbers were of the kind sold in the 1920's, worth only a few cents each. But seven of those inside were of the type put out in 1875. Of one cent denomination, black on buff in color, they carry a Liberty head, left, between two fasces. The legends are above, U.S. POSTAGE, below, ONE CENT. Of those put out in the latter part of 1875 all are inscribed "Write The Address . . ." Some 21 FOR SALE, MISCELLANEOUS 1 10' Tear-drop trailer. 3628 So. Pac. Hwy. I assured her that if I owned It I would be tempted to get rid of it to some museum, of course. "Why, it's been in our family since 1750, at least. We wouldn't think of such a thing." And she insisted on showing me the date 1749 carved in the wood. When I said something to her husband about the chair oyer a drink next day, it was obvious I had touched on a sore spot. "That confounded thing cost me $600. 1 had to pay that much to get it from Cousin Cynthia who was going to sell it to an antique dealer," he said. BE QUITE A P3IZE a picture like that a lot to pay that price for it. People have been painting them for years." "I guess you never noticed who signed it," said Jack switch ing on a strong light. "Take a look at this," and he pointed to the lower left-hand corner where I could now quite easily make out the signature "W. Keith." Jack had gone to the trouble of having the signature and the picture validated by two men with considerable knowledeg of William Keith (1838-1911), a famous and prolific artist claimed by California though born and raised in Scotland. The value of his pieces Keith turned out thousands averages about $1,500. The one I might have got but didn't frank feels is worth around $2,000. ' LUCKY INVESTMENT are watermarked and they are the ones of greater value. The watermark consists of a mono gram containing the initials US- POD. Fred's were of the water marked variety, unused and without a printed address or mes sage. 1 While he was checking his find against the description in Scott's United States Stamp Catalogue Specialized, Fred told me, a cus tomer walked jns spotted, the cards and immediately offered to buy them. Like many dealers, Fred is a collector first. He wanted his postal cards so much that he re fused an offer of the full cata logue price of $20 a card. But his business - instinct triumphed in the end. The cus tomer, a determined type, main tained the cards were so scarce as to justify a higher than cata logue price, finally making the acceptable offer of $25 apiece.
