J -T EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday. March 30, 19S5 Gandee Head of Chamber's New Education Committee (Editor's Note: This is an other in a series of articles pre pared and submitted to The Mail Tribune by officials of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce in an effort to further understand the cham ber and its activities.) Ron Gandee recently was se lected chairman of the newly formed education committee of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. The committee was formed this week as a result of interest in education stimulated by John Pletsch, president of the cham ber. The first meeting of the committee was held Monday, March 23 at the Jackson hotel. Lisle Berkshire, manager of the western division, U.S. Cham ber of Commerce, and Harry Lintz, Pacific Northwest repre sentative of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, attended the meeting in an advisory capacity to help lay plans for the committee's ac tion program. Has Many Activities Gandee has been the local rep resentative of the Mailwell En velope company in Medford for six years and affiliated with Commercial Printing for eight years. He has lived in this area since 1933 and his activities have included the Pear Bowl football games, Southern Oregon Hospitality, Community Chest and Oregon Open Golf tourna ment. At the present time, Gandee is a member of the board of di rectors of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. He is en gaged in activities of the cham bers' Tourist and Convention committee, a member of the Medford Lions club, general chairman of the Shrine circus and a member of the board of advisors of the Salvation Army. Teaching Background For more than a decade, Gan dee has been a school teacher and school principal, a back ground which gives him special qualifications for the chairman ship of the education committee. The purpose of the committee is to develop a greater understand ing between schools and busi nessmen. U.S. Chamber of Commerce surveys taken indicate that in communities where school sup port and education have been highly developed the standard of living is correspondingly high. The study also indicates that in those communities across the na tion where school support is weak and the education system is below par, the standard of living in that community and economic health of the town is at a low ebb. The Jackson County Cham ber's interest in the field of edu cation is part of a general move ment across the nation among chambers of commerce to create better understanding between fnnl systems and business peo ple in an effort to lift the gen tiul level of the economy. Robert Oppenheimer lecture at Wash ington. The withdrawals from the symposium on comparative phy siology, scheduled for Aug. 29 Sept. 2, came from T. H. Bullock, UCLA; Dr. Lewis H. Kleinholz, Reed College; Dr. Bradley T. Scheer, University of Oregon; Dr. Ladd Prosser, author of a physiology text book; C. A. J. Wiersma, California Institute of Technology, and Karl Wilbur. Duke University. Earlier Refusal An earlier refusal by seven scientists to appear at Washing ton caused the University to can cel a medical school symposium scheduled for April 7-8. Other scientists have with drawn from a zoology sympo sium set for August. Top The sudden reluctance by scientists to appear at Washing ton followed a decision by Dr Schmitz to reject a physics de partment recommendation that Dr. Oppenheimer be invited to Washington as a Walker-Ames lecturer. Dr. Schmitz said his decision was in the best interests of the university. Oppenheimer was an Atomic Energy Commis sion physicist whose security clearance was revoked by the government. The university president referred to the scien tist's "governmental relations" in refusing to invite him to the campus. The University of Washington board of regents has unanimous ly urjheld Dr. Schmitz in his decision. 1 SpecSaS Purchase LIMITED QUANTITY 1955 RCA Victor Mode! 21-5521 21 inch Felton, Tone Control, Phono Jack, Aluminized Tube, Ma hogany Finish. 1 339 95 Was NIGHTS 'TIL 9 6995 HAL KRUEGER and AL THOMPSON RCA VICTOR TV Radios Ranges 237 E.
