The joint announcement of the test was made by Civil De fense administrator Val Peter son and Defense Mobilizer Ar thur S. Flemming. They said the attack on 43 cities will deter mine the readiness of a "near saturation assault" on three in dustrial sections of the country. Using common sense, a person must realize no one tonic or so called cure-an coma correct all the disorders," he ex plained. Once a person avails himself to the Mi Hard treatment his skepticism immediately disap pears. HOPELESS CASES DISCOURAGED First the Millard specialists are quick to tell hopeless cases that they cannot be helped. But the "hopeless' cases are few. British foreign policy is that Quemoy and Matsu are territo rially part of mainland China and, anyway not worth fighting for. Hong Kong is a far different matter. Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill told Commons last week Britain would hold on to it, come what might. This reporter put to the colo nial office the comparison be tween the two Nationalist-held fortress and the British Crown Colony. "There is no parallel between the status of Hong Kong and that of the offshore islands of Quemoy and Matsu," the colonial official said, "and we are not going to be talked or jostled out of it. Given lo Britain "Hong Kong was given to Britain for all time under the treaty with China over 100 years ago when it was a barren rock. Quemoy and Matsu have never been ceded to anyone. It is true Improving Hair it requires 20 to 30 minutes. There is no charge for this ex amination and no appointment is necessary. After examination he is told the required length of treatment and how much it will cost. After starting treatment, he makes regular reports to the Mil lard firm in Chicago, and a tri chologist will return to check his progress periodically. To spread the opportunity of normal, healthy hair to the thousands who are desperately looking for h e 1 p, the Millard firm is sending specialists to various cities throughout the United States to conduct exami nations and start home treat ment. NO CURE ALL "We have no cure-all for slick, shiny baldness," Safranski em phasizes. "If there is fuzz, the root is still capable of creating hair and we can perform what seems ot be a miracle." There is one thing Safranski wants ot be certain every man and woman knows. If a recession appears at the temples or a spot begins to show up on the crown of the head, there is something wrong and it it should be given immediate attention. HAIR FOR LIFETIME "If clients follow our direc tions during treatment, and after they finish the course, there is no reason why they will not have hair all the rest of their lives," Safranski said. "Our firm is ''definitely behind this treat ment, it all depends on the in dividual's faithful observation of a few simple rules." HOW'S YOUR HAIR? If it worries you call Tricho logist S. Actually all 92 cities listed as critical target areas by the Civil Defense Administration will be they have never been adminis tered by the Peiping govern ment but territorially they must be regarded as part of China." The colonial office said that the island of Hong Kong first became a British naval base dur ing the Opium war of 1839-42 when Britain sought to block the importation of foreign opium into China. "The island was not taken by force of arms," an official said. "It was desolate and occupied only by a small fishing popula tion. It was the haunt of pirates and was unhealthy but its har bor was used as a naval base for British ships. "By a charter signed on April 5, 1843, the island of 32 square miles was ceded to the British government in perpetuity." Regarding the 355 square miles of Chinese mainland adja cent to Hong Kong which is in cluded in the colony, officials said this also was regarded as British territory under a 99 year lease which still has 42 years to run. All this is strictly from the official point of view. But, privately and candidly, Britons will admit there is a definite possibility Red China may abrogate the treaty, seek to On The (Distributed by King That Cole Porter is the out standing musical show genius of the twentieth century is probably true. Still, let's not forget Otto Harbach. The record will reveal Harbach has been connected with more musical show hits than Porter. Otto's first hit was "The Three Twins," starring Bessie McCoy, in which show was sung "Cuddle Up a Little Closer." After that Harbach wrote a song which I think Cole Porter has yet to top. Am referring to "Every Little Movement Has a Meaning All Its Own" from "Madame Sherry." To list all the Harbach hits would fill a column so I will just name a few to indicate Otto's rating as a musical show genius. They included, in addition to "The Three Twins" and "Madame Sherry," such smashers as "The Wall Street Girl," "The Firefly," "High Jinks," "Katinka," "Going Up," "Wildflower," "Kid Boots," No, No, Nanette," "Desert Song," "The Cat and the Fiddle" and "Roberta." Statuesque Siren Some young women who are tall and generously proportioned become depressed as to their fig ures. They shouldn't be. The Lil lian Russell type of beauty is very popular with many men. For example, take Sheila Mas ters,, one of the top darlings of the Paris cabarets. She is 5 feet 9 barefoot, and weighs 148. She is reported receiving more re quests for dates and proposals of marriage than any other enter tainer in Paris. Iceland has been a nation for over a thousand years and has never had a war. . . . Am asked the real name of Ed Gardner, airwave luminary star of Duffy's Tavern. Answer is Edward Po genburg. . . If you chew on a spring of parsley after consum ing onions, the odor of said on ions will be eliminated from your breath. Fishing The color pink seems to have a strong attraction for fish. Pink nets have been used very success fully by Japanese fishermen. That's what I recently reported. Now a Hoquiam (Wash.) sub scriber writes, "I live in the heart of the steelhead country. That type of fish is difficult to catch. However, the most fish caught recently in our section has been by a man using a lure of pinkish color called the "cherry bobber." So it would seem the claim that pink attracts fish is absolutely correct Asking Queries from clients: Q. What is your suggestion for a wager in the Kentucky Derby future book? A. Jean's Joe. Across the board. Q. Who cre ated the title role in the original stage production of George Kel ly's play, "Craig's Wife." How old was this actress at that time? A. Part of Mrs. Craig was cre ated by that extremely brilliant actress, Chrystal Heme, who was then 42. Passing By Kitty Carlisle. Smart looking and talented singing actress. In private life wife of Moss Hart, the playwright. When Kitty and Moss were married it was the first trip to the altar for both. Kitty was 32 at that time, Moss was 41. involved. Those that are not di rectly attacked were urged to be ready either for a bombing at tack or to render support and relief to areas under attack. by British end the 99 year lease and, if nec essary, try to take Hong Kong by force. Mao Tse Tung said in Febru ary, 1950, that he would "tear up all treacherous treaties that have been effected with imperialistic nations." In that event, Britain intends to fight for Hong Kong. Defense Ministry officials cite the statement of Field Marshal Sir John Harding, chief of the imperial general staff, who visit ed Hong Kong last month and reported its defenses were "in good form." But the problem is complicat- by that fact that the Chinese population of the colony has swollen to over 2,500,000. Offi cials here agree that such a population makes the colony es sentially Chinese regardless of nationalism or Communism. One very persuasive view point about Hong Kong is that Communist China is eminently satisfied with its present status. It gives the Reds a doorway to the outside world, provides the middleman's trading post and exchange banking center and it is fairly easy for Chinese to move to and fro across the bor der with Red China. The bamboo curtain is pretty frayed there. By E. V. Durling Features Syndicate, Inc.) Among the Married ' Have you checked your wife's handbag lately to ascertain the number of and kind of things she clutters it up with? Every wife should be compelled to stand regular handbag inspec tion. This for the protection of people who have to stand in line while females with overpacked handbags fumble around for their fare. Women protest that men exaggerate as to the contents of handbags. In this connection consider the fact that a woman reporting the loss of a handbag to the police said it contained among other things two insur ance policies, a banana paring knife and a towel. As We Live By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D. UNHAPPILY WED FOR 28 YEARS As long as her children are young, a woman has an obliga tion to maintain a home for them, regardless of how un happy her marriage may be. But when they are grown and in homes of their own, this obliga tion ends. (Q) "I have been unhappily married for 26 years. My hus band is utterly a brute and is making a nervous wreck out of me. He is so stingy that he ex pects me to work and turn over every cent I earn to him. Now he is buying a car and ex Dr. Hurlock pects me lo help pay for it, but he won't let me use it. He objects to my going out to see my friends but he never takes me anywhere. I have two married children, but they are so afraid of their father that they won't speak up and tell him how badly he is treating me. On the job I'm fine, but as soon as I net home, I am nervous and unhappy. My hus band is slowly driving me crazy and I don't know what to do." (A) Why not try a separation for a time? You have no obliga tions to remain with a man who treats you so badly. Since you have a job, you can support yourself away from your husband. He would have no legal obligation to support you unless you took the matter to court and obtained a legal separation on the grounds of mental or physical cruelty or both. Until you have a chance to get away and get a better per spective on the problem, take no final steps such as getting a legal separation or divorce. See how things go when you are away from your husband and how your health is when you are re lieved of the nervous strain you now have in your home. Since your two children are on your side, I am sure you could count on them to help you readjust your life. They may not want to get into an argument with their, father, but I am sure they would be willing to help you if you needed their help. This knowledge should give you the courage to make the break before your health is ruined. (COPYRIGHT 1955, GENERAL FEATURES CORP.) Simple Heart Los Angeles (U.R) A simple operation which offers new hope to many coronary heart disease patients and allows them to get up a day after surgery was de scribed Monday to family doc tors attending the American Academy of General Practice's seventh , annual scientific as sembly here. Dr. M. S. Mazel, chief surgeon at Edgewater Hospital, Chicago, said that the pericardium, a sac like covering which surrounds the heart, is opened and any fluid removed. The sac then is partially filled with a very fine silicon powder which is spread between the heart and the peri cardium.
