Griffin, 89, hitchhikes to keep active and remain independent. If the former mail carrier runs out of stamps, or feels the urge to visit his kin, or just restless, he goes out on the highway and waves his thumb. Few motorists pass him by, particularly women drivers. Many who normally would never pick up a hitchhiker find it dif ficult to pass up the dignified gentleman. The message, relayed by a special recording device, is play ed on an average of 600 times daily now, according to Rev. Ralph Brushaber, pastor of the Warner Memorial chapel. This Church of God congregation first installed the device six months ago and calls have risen from an initial 25 to 30 daily to as high as 1,000 in a 24-hour per iod. r The messages are changed weekly and may be heard at any time of day or night. Call ers may leave their names and addresses if they wish a visit from the pastor. "Visitation team's" from the church help those with special problems. The pastor said at least two calls a day were from persons who are almost desparate in addition to th usual sprink ling of return messages from humorists.
