My experi ence with people has shown me that people are much the same wherever you go. I would like your opinion." (A) If you have any evidence that the bovs in your son's school vi are not nn to the standards you want your son's associates to meet, the solution to the problem is to move. Before you do, how ever, take time off to visit the Dr. Hurlock school and the church in the neighborhood where you are thinking of liv ing. This will give you some idea of the type of boys your son would be associated with there. However, since you admire the parents of the boys in your son's present class, I rather suspect that his lack of congeniality with them is his fault. His not wanting to play with them may be a case of "sour grapes." An only child who is even a "bit spoiled" is not likely to be popular with other boys. He then often builds up defenses and tries to convince himself as well as his parents that the oth er boys are "not nice." Even if you decide to move, don't neglect the important as pect of this problem, your son's ability to get along with other boys. This problem will face him wherever he is. Why not plan, as the spring advances, some outings for your son and small groups of his classmates? Give the boys a good time but watch your son to see how he behaves with the other boys. With this knowledge, your will then be able to help him get along with other children. (Copyright, 1955. General Features Corp.) WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Readers should address inquiries to: William Brady, 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE EETWEEN ARTHRITIS AND RHEUMATIZ? It is abundantly evident in the letters readers write me that most of them think I'm just fa cetious or may be not quit hep to what rack eteers are do ing these days, when I call ar thritis "rheu- matiz." If you have any such no tion I don't blame you. But Dr. Brady I must say that if you cling to that notion after your have finished read ing this piece, I'm sorry for you. But just in case you haven't the time or perhaps are inter rupted or lost interest before you finish it. please send me a stamped, self-addressed envel ope for the pamphlet Calcium and Rheumatiz. It can't do any harm and, you never know, it may do you or somebody you love a lot of good. Very likely you harbor a vague fancy that it is some spec ific, special or particular dis ease that is more exclusive or fashionable than ordinary rheu matism, and no wonder, when we consider all the hokum the medical authorities hand out. The term arthritis means joint inflammation, heat, pain, red ness and swelling (calor, dolor, rubor, tumor). The term rehumatism or rheu matiz has no particular mean ing today. If a joint which was perfect ly normal yesterday or last week becomes hot, painful, red and swollen, it is probably inflam ed, and you may say the joint is inflamed or if you're a gulli ble customer you may be con tent to call it arthritis. To be sure, there are a good many cases of arthritis, pneumo coccic arthritis, streptococci ar thritis, gonorrheal arthritis, etc., but when a doctor calls your joint trouble "arthritis" without specifying what kind he thinks it is, watch out. As a rule the joint disability that comes on insidiously, with no noticeable calor, dolor, ru bor, tumor and persists for a year or longer, is not arthritis at all, but just plain degeneration of joint tissues, which, for want of a better name, we may call rheumatiz. Now I have already stipulat ed that the term rheumatism or rheumatiz has no particular sig nificance. Maybe it had some vague significance when Osier was writing his book. Chronic rheumatism.
