Newspaper Page Text... :.- H? r .1 ,4 Med Treasure Controversial Oregon Coin Certain To Bring Tidy Sum U. S. Mint officials and pri vate numismatists disagree over the' initials on an Oregon S5 gold piece, and the mint experts are apparently wrong. But no matter who is wrong or right, you can't possibly lose If you happen to come across a coin that agrees with either side. There is no dispute about the obverse of the coin, which was struck off in the days of the little known Oregon Gold Rush of 1849. Around the outside it reads OREGON EXCHANGE COMPANY. Within the circle formed by those words is the legend 130G. NATIVE GOLD 5D. On the reverse, according to various catalogues, is an outer circle formed by the initials K.M.T.A.W.R.G.S. Within that is a beaver above the letters T.O. (standing for Oregon Territory and mistakenly reversed) and that, in turn, above the date 1849 which is set off by laurel branches. The Mint's Catalogue of Coins of the United States agrees with the above description except that it gives the next to the last LAYMAN GIVES PRIEST "If you take them all for $25, okay. Otherwise, we're not in terested," the housewife said. Though most of the 150 vol umes were of no interest to me, there were about a dozen that would justify my taking them all. Each one carries a different scene in the story of a pretty widow who, besieged by swarms of admirers, finally takes the veil, thus so disappointing the males that they all enter the priesthood. The initials are those of the last names of the men making up the Oregon Ex change Co. Kilburne, Mc gruder, Taylor, Abernethy, Wil son, Rector, Gill, Campbell and Noys Smith. Campbell is the man who made the dies from which the coins were struck in Oregon City. History does not show what happened to Campbell in cutting the dies. Was it too much Scotch or Bourbon that caused him to leave out a "C" for himself when he put in the "G" for Gill, as he should have done? If so, that could also account for the pecu liar reversal of T.O. for O.T. In any event, if you ever find one of these coins with a "G" in the initials instead of a "C," as 13 the case with those I have seen and most catalogues I have read, it is worth at least S500 and probably very much more. On the other hand, if the next to the last initial is a "C," as the Mint publication gives it, I would say you can get twice ss much for it. Aitkin's work has sold for as high as $12d during the past few years. LOVE STORY IN PICTURES giving the illusion that each scene has been taken from Judge or some other magazine which Charles Dana Gibson illustrated at the turn of the century. That illusion is further height ened by each picture's appear ance in a square that is cap tioned in small type with a line such as "A Widow and Her Friends." The plates, which originally old at 50 cents each in 1901, were made by the Royal Doulton Potteries, of Lambeth, England, and are marked accordingly.
