BIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Parties Honor Diane Findley; Rites in June Miss Diane Findley, whose wedding to N. B. Bender Jr., has been set for June in First Pres byterian church, Medford, was honored by two parties last week. Miss Findley, home from the University of "Washington for spring vacation, is a daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Findley, Old Stage road. First of the parties was a luncheon given Wednesday by Mr. Bender's mother at the Ben der home, 1941 Westerlund drive. Decorations were of daffo dils and hyacinths. Guests included close friends of the bride-elect home from school for vacation. Present were Miss Carolyn Shangle, Miss Pat Lydiard, Mrs. Kenneth Phil lips. Miss Ellen West. Miss Car ol Coleman, Miss Kathryn Mc Allister. Miss Margo Lageson. Miss Kaye Durno, Miss Ann Hart, the guest of honor and her mother. Second of the events for Miss Findley was a brunch Friday morning given by Mrs. William McAllister and Mrs. B. L. Lage son at the former s home on Hill crest road. Miss McAllister and Miss Laseson assisted. Miss Findley was presented a shower of gifts for her new home and they were arranged on a table decorated with an um brella and sprinkling can in pink and green. In Medford for the shower were Mrs. Glenn Gibbons and her daughter, Mrs. Bell McKay, former Medford residents now living in Roseburg. Miss Findley, a member of Alpha Phi sorority, will leave to day to return to school in Seattle. Her fiance is living in Seattle and the two will live in that city after the wedding. Oak GrovePTA To Hold Election Election of officers for the coming year will take place at the next meeting of Oak Grove Parent Teacher associa tion. Members are asked to note that the time of meeting has been changed to 7:15 p.m. Mon day, March 28. The nominating committee has a full slate of candidates from which to choose and the president asks for a lare participation of members. Refreshments will b served by mothers of children in the third grade. Cole man, 1806 East Main street, an nounced the engagement of their daughter, Carol, to Arthur Schweikhart Monroe, Pasadena, Calif., at a party given at the Coleman home Friday. Mr. Mon roe is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Theodore William Monroe. Twelve of Miss Coleman's friends were bidden to the lunch eon and announcement party. Miss Coleman attended school in San Leandro, Calif., before coming to Medford and is a grad uate of Medford High school. Both Miss Coleman and her fiance are students at the Uni versity of Washington, Seattle. The bride-elect is a member of Alpha Phi sorority, and Mr. Mon roe is a member of Sigma Nu fra ternity. An August wedding is planned. Miss Coleman will leave today to return to school. 4 Induction Ceremony Conducted for Tri-Hi-Y An induction ceremony was conducted Monday evening by members of the Sophomore Tri-Hi-Y group when officers were presented pins by Miss Mary Vandenburg and each member was given a membership pin. Mothers of members attended and punch and cookies were served. Miss Pat Johnston is presi dent of the organization. Watson, 1307 Kings highway, announce the engagement of their daugh- i ter, Miss Leah Anne Watson, to James LeRoy Kelley, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Kelley, route 1, box 640, Eagle Point. The wedding is planned for June. Miss Watson is a senior at Medford Senior High school and her fiance is a 1952 graduate of Eagle Point High school. He is an employee of Standard stations. Leah Ann Watson Howard Gardeners Have Program on Shrubs, Perennials Howard Mrs. L. C. McCay, spoke on perennials at a meeting of the Howard Garden club Tuesday at the home of Mrs. W. J McCullough, Old Stage road. Mrs. Wayne Smith was acting president for the business ses sion. Mrs. H. E. Peyton discussed blooming shrubs. It was pointed out that "arm chair gardening" and advanced planning will not only lead to better gardens but can save val uable plantings if the plan is re tained and consulted when working in the perennial gar den. Various shrubs and their favorite locations and their value to the yard were dis cussed. Mrs. R. R. Hendricks and Mrs. Dick Gillepsle assisted the hostess with refreshments. The next meeting of the club will be at the home of Mrs. Jack Campbell on April 28. Rogue-Elk Unit Hears Reports of Committees Rogue-Elk Committee re ports were given and program planning for the next year was conducted at a meeting of the Rogue-Elk Home Extension unit held last week. Spring festival plans also were discussed and Mrs. Ranald Axtell, vice-president, presided in the absence of the chairman, Mrs. A. Collier. Mrs. Arthur Humes and Mrs. Henry Shruder prepared vege tables for the day's project and luncheon was served to 18 mem bers and one guest by Mrs. Howard Ash and Mrs. Axtell. Mr. Matheny is now stationed at the Naval Air facility, Annap olis, Md., and after being as signed the past two years at North Island Naval Air station, San Diego, with Fleet Aerial Education Training unit, Pacific division, as naval bomber-pilot instructor in celestial navigation. Mr. Matheny graduated from Jacksonville High school in 1949 and attended Southern Oregon college for two years before en tering the Navy. He plans to re enter SOC to complete his stu dies upon receiving his discharge from the Navy next fall. Central Point Unit To Conduct Workshop; Items Needed Listed Central Point A workshop on furniture refinishing will be conducted by Central Point Home Extenison unit members Tuesday, March 29 at the home of Mrs. L. C. Gorden, and will open at 9 a.m. Numerous items should be taken by the members including a sack lunch and cup. The workshop needs will be a piece of furniture for refinish ing, rubber gloves, old news papers, three one-pint cans of varnish remover, waxfree and non inflammable; one pint of de natured alcohol, one quart of turpentine, eight tin cans about the size of coffee container, a small paint brush and a tooth brush, cloths and burlap, a block of soft wool for the sanding and a putty knife and pen knife, an eye dropper, and a work table. The wedding ceremony will be held Tuesday, April 12, at 8 o'clock in the evening at First Presbyterian church. The bride elect is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Vern Shangle, Kings highway, and Mr. Mueller's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Mueller of Pala tine. Miss Shangle was a student at Whitworth college, Spokane, until recently and her fiance, a senior at Whitworth, will be graduated in June. His major is education. Following the wedding the couple will live in Spokane. Lodge Announces Festival Entrant Linda McGinty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward McGinty, has been entered in the Medford Pear Blossom festival queen contest by members of the Ol ive Rebekah lodge. The candi date's mother is inside guardian for the lodge. The members voted to enter the child in the contest during a meeting Mon day evening at the IOOF hall. W. H. Dyer had charge of the evening's program and present ed Bliss Heine and his entertain ers. Included were numbers done by Judy Morris, Vicki Webster, Krista Baker, Melody Sue Bo gener, Sidney Yarnell, Diane Benson, Judy Benson, Yvonne Evans, Karen Fagle, Nancy Es pey, Theresa Fogel, and Lorene Bennett. Registered Nurse Engaged To Speak At LPNA Meeting Mrs. Clark Anderson,, regis tered nurse, will be the guest speaker for the Licensed Prac tical Nurses association meetiing Monday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. The session will be held at the Community hospital penthouse. A preconvention so cial hour was held on Friday! evening for those delegates ar riving early. The official business session was opened on Saturday morn ing with Dr. J. T. Dixon of the First Methodist church deliver ing the invocation and Mayor Earl Miller welcoming the group to Medford. Mrs. Kathryn Thom as co-chairman, and Mrs. Doro thy Anderson, Portland, . state president, presided at the ses sions. Guest speaker at the luncheon was Alwin W. Miller, chairman of secretarial science at Sou thern Oregon college. Mrs. Mil ler is also an honorary member of the Rogue River chapter. During the afternoon session, reports on membership and ch a p t e r procurement, budget committee and national educa tion committee were made by Mrs. Margaret Hansen and Miss Jean Brimacombe, both of Sa lem. Miss Martha Rosamond, Spokane, Wash., northwestern district vice-president reported on National affairs and gave a preview of the national conven tion which is to be held in Chat tanoogs, Tenn. on July 20 - 24, 1955. State committee chairmen ap pointed are Mrs. Margaret Han sen, Salem, membership and chapter procurement; Miss Hel en Morrill, Eugene, education and program; Mrs. Darlyne Rudd, Medford, finance; Mrs. Dorothy Thain, Portland, rules and by-laws; and Miss Jean Brimacombe, Salem, public re lations. An informal banquet Satur day night climaxed the sessions. Mrs. Thomas was in charge of the program which consisted of songs by Clyde Wheaton and dances by a group from Miss Pat's School of Dance. . Miss Rosamond officially in stalled the officers for the com ing year. Mrs. Dorothy Anderson, Port land, state president; Mrs. Jan ice Long, Medford, secretary; and Miss Helen Ruettgers, Sa lem, treasurer; were unanimous ly elected to office at the after noon session. Highlight of the program was the presentation of the Certified Professional Secretary certifi cate to Mrs. Hazel Kellar, Port land. Miss Rosamond announced that as a result of the 960 who took the 1954 CPS examina tions, 222 received their certifi cates. There are nationally now 582 CPS holders. Oregon has three CPS holders. NSA chapters in Portland, Eugene and Salem were repre sented at the meeting. Mrs. Rudd was general chair man of arrangements for the event, and Mrs. Jeanne Brown is president of the local chapter.
