Beta Sigma Phi
Gives Reception w
For Field Officer
Miss Elsie Anderson, field
representative from the Inter
national office of Beta Sigma
Phi sorority, was a guest of the
Medford-Ashland Area council
of Beta Sigma Phi last weekend.
Friday, a reception was held for
Miss Anderson at the home of
Mn. Nick DeWitt, 320 Keene
way drive, president of Alpha
Beta chapter of the sorority.
Members from XI Mu, Alpha
Rho and Alpha Beta chapters
wera present during the eve
ning. Refreshments were served
by the hostess, Mrs. DeWitt and
Mrs. Nils Edin.
Saturday afternoon Miss An
derson presided for a business
meeting at the Jackson hotel.
Officers of Xi Mu, Alpha Sigma,
Alpha Rho and Alpha Beta
chapters as well as the officers
of the Medford-Ashland Area
council, attended this meeting.
Discussion was held regarding
the proposed silver anniversary
chapters and it was decided that
both the Ashland chapter and
Medford chapters would organ
ize a silver anniversary chapter.
Mrs. Curt Butterfield, exten
sion officer of Alpha Rho chap
ter, signed the silver anniver
sary scroll for Medford and
Mrs. Doris Lassen, president of
Alpha Sigma chapter signed the
scroll for Ashland. This scroll
will be presented to Walter
Ross, founder of the sorority,
end will be framed and hung
in the international headquar
ters of Beta Sigma Phi at Kan
sas City, Mo.
Members of the Medford-Ashland
Area council served coffee
and cookies to the members at
the Camp White Domiciliary
center Wednesday evening.
Members and guests from XI
Mu. Alpha Rho. Alpha Sigma,
Alpha Beta and Nu Phi Mu chap
ters also gave a program. On
the program were Miss Krista
Baker, Miss Laura Lamberty,
Miss Betty Hawkins, Miss Carol
Slater, Mrs. Wilson Slater, Miss
Delores Meyer, Miss Vernola
Hutchinson. Miss Adabee Seiler,
Mrs. T. R. Lytle and The Delazo
Trio from Ashland.
Noble Grands Club
List Activities
At Recent Meeting
Members of the Noble Grands
club met last week with Mrs.
Helen Chapman in charge. Mrs.
Katherine Fleming was recom
mended during the business ses
sion for the degree of chivalry.
The members received a note
'fit thanks from Mrs. Byrle E.
Druryt president of the Rebek
ah Assembly of Oregon, thank
ing them for their gift of dimes
which they gave during the last
March of Dimes drive.
Mrs. June Hoskin, a Rebekah
Jpdge member from Myrtle
Creek, attended the meeting.
A cake walk was conducted

Mrs. Charles Weingle furnished
piano music. Mrs. Lewis Thomp
son, degree staff captain, an
nounced a practice for March
31 at 7:30 p.m., to prepare for
Initiation ceremonies.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Lewis Thompson, Mrs. O.
S. Walden, and Mrs. Margaret
Davis.

Club Women Discuss
District Convention
A district convention to be
held in Ashland on April 21
was discussed at a meeting
March 24 of the Mistletoe club.
A discussion also took place re
garding the coming Medford
Pear Blossom festival in which
one of the juvenile members,
of the Royal Neighbors of Am
erica lodge, Linda Chew, is a
queen candidate.
The meeting was held at the
girls Community club and a
covered dish luncheon preceded
the business session. Potted
pansy plants centered the lun
cheon tables.
A guessing game was conduct
ed by Mrs. W. H. Arnold and
was won by Mrs. Ana McCor
mack who was presented a
prize. Another prize won dur
ing the session was received by
Mrs. Art Johnson.
The next club meeting is set
for April 13 when a dessert
luncheon will be served by Mrs.
Randy Hugdahl, Mrs. Harry Mil
ler, Mrs. A. R. Allen and Mrs.
McCormack.
Accordion Students
Entertain Veterans;
Presentation Made
A group from Eve Prentice's
accordion band entertained the
Veterans of Foreign Wars in the
Camp White veterans hall,
Wednesday evening with an hour
of music. Sandra Charters, 7, di
rected and band and sang several
numbers.

ett, Oveta Walden. Melody
Pierce, Virginia Walters snd
Richard Cooper.
Post Commander Young pre
sented Eve Prentice with a hand
tooled leather mat which had
won five blue ribbons in exhi
bitions in Texas. The presenta
tion was made by Ivan Lusk.

Ivan Lusk of the Auxiliary VFW
served refreshments.

Annual VFW Essay Contest
Winner is Nancy Hamilton

Nancy Hamilton, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Moore Hamilton, 43
Rose ave., is the winner of the
annual essay contest sponsored
by the auxiliary to Crater Lake
Chapter 1833, Veterans of For
eign Wars, it was announced last
week.
Miss Hamilton is a senior at
Medford High school. She will
be presented with a bronze med
al and a prize of $25 by the aux
iliary. Theme of the contest was
civilian defense.
Second prize goes to Stanley
Culy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gale
Culy, 21 Washington st. He will
receive $15. Third prize will go
to Miss Susan Devoe, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. DeVoe,
2200 Woodlawn dr., who will
receive $10.
All three contestants and
their parents will be invited to
be at a meeting of the auxiliary
in the near future, for presenta
tion of the awards.

say will go to the state headquar
ters, where it will compete with
other winners throughout the
state. Winner of the state contest
will be entered in the national
St. Marks Guild

To Make Plans
For Rose Show
Plans for a rose show to be
held in early June will be made
at a session of the Medford Rose
society Monday, March 28 when
they will meet at 8 p. m., in the
Jackson county courthouse.
Wayne P. Grier, president, in
vites all persons interested in
growing roses to attend the
meeting.
This will be the first meeting
presided over by the newly elect
ed officers.

Style Revue of Tudor Guild
Attracts Capacity Audience
"Reflections in the Glass of Fashion" was the theme of the
spring style show given by Tudor guild Monday evening at Tally
Ho Hunt room on the highway between Medford and Ashland.
The event, attended by a capacity audience, was a benefit for the
actor's scholarship fund of the Oregon Shakespearean festival.
The show was lifted from the
realm of the ordinary by H. Paul
Kliss, Portland, Shakespearean
actor and director who served
as commentator, and Rod Bar
rows, Portland, who prepared
the script. Lines from Shake
speare were used to put sparkle
into the commentary, and during
intermission the two men enter
tained with songs and dialogue
from the show "Kiss Me Kate."
The number "Brush Up Your
Shakespeare" from the show
proved especially popular with
the audience. Mrs. Wallace
Sousa, Ashland, was accompanist
for the numbers, and Mrs. Loren
F. Flannery of Medford provided
background organ music for the
show.
Models for the show included
small children, teenagers and
adults. Included in the list were
Mrs. Harry Skerry, president of
the guild, Mrs. William Dawkins
and Mrs. Beverly Cope, who
were co-chairmen for the show.

The show, in five scenes,
opened with "at home" wear and
included streets and sports cloth
ing, Easter and "Sunday best"
for the children and more formal
clothing for adults.
Mrs. Skerry closed and opened
the show, and for her final ap
pearance wore a Don Loper orig
inal in white lace with fox stole.
Appearing with her in the clos
ing number was Richard Graham
in a tuxedo suit.
Cooperating shops were Burel
son's, Big Y Tot shop, Barker's,
Jean Hart's. Adrienne's, Mann's,
Bert Pree, Hadley's, and the An
ticipation shop, all Medford, and
Carole Anne shop, Ashland.
Serving as ushers during the
evening were Mrs. C. Rease
Braley, Mrs. -Max Wimmer and
Mrs. Myron Root, Medford, and
Mrs. E. W. Jermark and Mrs.
Frank Davis, Ashland. Mrs. Bra
ley was chairman.
Cut and potted flowers, and
parakeets in cages provided a
colorful setting for the show.
Rotana President
On Annual Visit
Installs Officers
Miss Beatrice L. Crewdson of
Portland, National Rotana pres
ident, made the annual presi
dent's visit to Medford Rotana
club Wednesday evening.
A dinner meeting was held in
the Rogue room at the Medford
hotel. Following dinner, candle
light installation services were
conducted by Miss Crewdson for
new officers of the Medford
club.
Those installed were Mrs. Rob
ert L. Powell, president; Mrs.
Hugh F. Friel, first vice-president;
Miss Jane Hansen, second
vice-president; Mrs. William O.
Blackledge, secretary; Mrs. Mar
vin F. Trautman, treasurer, and
Miss Mabel Nye and Mrs. Jess
G. Vincent, board members.
The national president was
presented a gift from the Med
ford club and a past president's
pin was presented to Mrs. Vin
cent, retiring president.
Miss Crewdson made sugges
tions on betterment of Rotana
clubs and spoke on the history,
aims and accomplishments.

E. J. Klimko and Mrs. Dora Car
nail. Mrs. Florence Lance be
came a member.

Installation Rites;
Vote to Aid Project
Mrs. George Howard and Mr.
George Nichols were installed at
right and left supporters to Mrs.
E. C. Dameron, vice-president
of the auxiliary to the Canton
Siskiyou, Patriarchs Militant,
during a meeting of the canton
and auxiliary Friday evening.
Also installed were Mrs. Eber
Weed, as flag bearer and Mrs.
E. W. Pease, officer of the guard.
Mrs. Blanche Robinson, past
president of the auxiliary, did
the installing, assisted by Mrs.
O. S. Walden, adjutant.
Frank Mannis, captain of th
canton, presided for the men's
meeting and Mrs. Fred Daugher
ty, auxiliary president, took
charge of the women's meeting.
The women voted to present
a gift of money to the state auxi
liary president, Mrs. Nellie Rog
ers, for use in her project of the
year, an electric stove for th
IOOF home hospital. A gift of
money has been sent for a fami
ly night program and to th
Heart fund.
Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Robinson
and Mrs. Weed were in charge
of dinner arrangements. The
April committee appointed is
made up of Mrs. Pease, Mrs. W.
H. Dyer and Mrs. Lewis Thompson.
