Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) There'll be shooting again next month in Phenix City, Ala., one-time "most wicked city in the na tion," but this time the wea pons will be movie cameras from Holly wood. An enter prislng inde pendent movie Aline Mosby company, Bis-ehoff-Diamond Productions, is shipping director Phil Karlson, a crew and a batch of New York television actors to film a pic ture based on the headlines about the city. "The Phenix City Story" is its title. "Sure, we're taking along a bodyguard," director Karlson said today. "The attorney gen eral there told us to take every precaution with our personnel. There are some rough people left in the town who don't want this picture made." Follow News Hollywood independent film makers are quick to pounce upon headlines that have ready made audiences. After the re cent H-bomb "fallout" news stories, titles were registered to cover every plot from "H-Bomb, Detroit" to "H-Bomb, New York." The ink was hardly dry on the Serge Rubinstein murder yarns before a claim was filed for the title, "The Serge Rubinstein Story." The news of how a reforming attorney was murdered before he could clean up Phenix City also came to the attention of the celluloid businessmen of Holly wood. Two weeks ago Director Karlson visited the Alabama community to line up location sites. The first week in April the director and his company plan to film the entire movie on the actual locale. "Since the militia cleaned up the town the good people are in control and are cooperating with us," Karlson said. Sign Citizens "The gambling section is clos ed but the city is going to turn on the lights again so we can photograph it. We've already signed up many of .the citizens there to act in the film. "We want to give it a docu mentary, realistic flavor. We've also using New York actors from television. We'll shoot in Phenix City five weeks." Karlson is wide-eyed with tales of Phenix City, where truth apparently is stranger than Hollywood screen fiction. He claims he met a man who "has killed four people and still is a respected citizen." One of the town "villains" took down his mail box so the movie mak- Relations With Reds To Be Japanese Goal Tokyo U.R) Prime Minis ter Ichiro Hatoyama has prom ised that his newly install ed cabinet will make a maxi mum effort to restore normal relations with Russia and Red China. (U.R) Charles Keen boasted today his modern steam-powered automo bile gets "25 miles to the gallon of water" and has so much pow er he's afraid to open it up on the road. The neat little sport coupe, which he calls a "Keen Steam liner," has no exhaust and does not make any noise, yet 'has so much pickup that when he steps on the accelerator "it just about jumps." All of this and speed, too. Keen said he had never had the courage to shove the accelera tor all the way down, but he has driven it 80 miles per hour with only partial power. The uncanny silence is the thing that amazes most viewers. A passenger once told him the car sounds "as if it's being push ed by someone wearing rubber shoes." He said the silence comes from the fact that the engine has no exhaust. All 'Bugs' Are Out The hand-built steam car has cost Keen, owner of a Madison die and stamping business, about 15 years and 5100,000 to devel op. He said he has finally lick ed all the "bugs" in the vehicle, "but I sure did a lot of work to get them out." A steam boiler of his own de sign under the hood develops about 1000 pounds of pressure 35 seconds after he starts it. The steam drives a two-cylinder Keen-designed engine which is the equivalent of an eight-cylinder gasoline engine because the pistons don't have to make a special stroke to exhaust the burned fuel. Every stroke is a power stroke. The steam returns to the con denser, which is located where the radiator is in a regular car, and it becomes water again. Then the water is turned back to steam and the process is re peated all over again. Runs on Anything Water is boiled by means of i burner, which can be run on kerosene, diesel oil, paint thin ner, furnace oil, or even gaso line. In fact, it will run on any thing combustible, "including moonshine w-hisky," Keen said. He said his 10-gallon tank of water is enough to last 250 miles and he gets 15 to 16 miles per gallon of low-cost fuel. Unlike the old Stanley Steam er, the Keen steamliner takes only 35 seconds to get up steam. The Stanley took 20 to 30 min utes, and sometimes exploded. "The danger of an explosion is non-existence in this car," Keen said. No Shift. No Clutch There is no gear shift and no clutch. When the accelerator is pushed, live steam is fed into the engine instead of more gas as in the internal combustion type engine. To back up, a lever is pulled which merely reverses the engine. It will go just as fast backwards as it will for ward, which is something to think about. Maintenance is no problem. Keen figured the car could run 200,000 miles without a major overhaul. He has already driven it about 40,000 miles without any trouble. Keen himself doesn't get all steamed up over his car. He said "it's not super, not colossal, just a nice automobile to drive."
