At the last meeting of the club the members studied the coun tries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic on the island of His paniola. The first European set tlement there was built from the timbers of the wrecked Santa Maria, Columbus' ship. The first permanent settlement was start ed there a year later by his brother. Haiti was the second inde pendent nation in the new world the United States being the first. Haiti is also the only French speaking republic in the new world. Based on a Negro aristo cracy, Haiti was freed from French rule by the revolt of the thousands of slaves, led by Tous saint LOverture, Jean Jacque Dessalines, and Henri Christ ophe. All of these were born in slavery but rose to become a ruler in the island for varying lengths of time. Toussaint died in a French prison; Dessalines was shot and killed from am bush by Christophe, who then proclaimed himself Henri I. He ruled until his cruelty and greed caused a revolution in 1820, and then he shot and killed himself with a silver bullet. In 1916 the United States landed Marines in Haiti to pre vent damage to American prop erty. The U.S. helped straighten out the finances of the country and finally left in 1.934. Haiti joined the Allies in World War II, and now does most of her trading with the U.S. The Dominican Republic his tory is similar to that of Haiti, and it is now ruled by Trujillo. i open at morning business session will 9:30 a.m. tomorrow with Mrs. Katherine Thomas, co chairman, and Mrs. Dorothy An derson, state president, presid ing. This is certainly not pleas ant to live with, as the woman who wrote the following letter is discovering. She said: (Q) "My husband likes to think that he is a Romeo. He is always bragging about the way the girls fall for him. Now, I wouldn't mind this too much as I know he is imagining a lot of it. What I do object to is his slovenli ness in the house. He comes home from work, doesn't bother lo wash up or change his' clothes, and sometimes won't even take a bath for a week. In summer, he some times smells so that I hate to go near him and it makes me sick at my stomach to eat at the same table with him. "But, when he is going out where he may see some girls, does he fix himself! He is neat as a pin, smells like a per fume shop, and you wouldn't know he was the same man. As his wife, I feel that I should be given a chance to see him neat and clean once in a while, too. How can I get him o change his slovenly habits?" (A) You are being very indul gent toward your husband and now is the time to take some action in the opposite direc tion. As a mar ried man, he should not be going to places where he can flirt with girls and leaving you at home alone. It may Dr. Hurlock flatter him and inflate his ego to have girls fall in love with him, but you can be sure that this does not hap pen without some effort on his part. Why not insist that he take Iron On Colors! By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D. you out for some fun too? About his appearance, that you can control by taking a firm stand. If he is not neat and clean, refuse to prepare any meals for him. No wife should be subject ed to nauseating odors from prespiration at a meal. He can fix himself up properly at home just as he can when he goes out. When he takes off dirty clothes, throw them into a tub of water and let the dirt soak out of them. When you wash them will depend on when he cleans himself up. Don't let him have clean clothes until he is willing to bathe himself as often as any self - respecting man should. (COPYRIGHT 1955. GENERAL FEATURES CORP.) Dinner Planned By Lady Shriners The monthly meeting of Lady Shriners will be held Monday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Medford hotel. Instead of cheese, home econo mists suggest stuffing celery with chopped chicken, ham or smoked turkey, using savory pate as a binder. It's different, and it's delicious. Study Home Economics For Husband. Career Chicago (U.R) If a girl wants to go to college to get a degree, a husband and a high paying job, her best bet is to study home economics. Miss Louise Mojonnier, chair man of i.ie home economics de partment at Illinois Institute of Technology, said a shortage of home economics teachers and dieticians has created unlimited job opportunities for graduates. She added that a large num ber of home economists never use their degrees outside the home. " ' "More than half of the Illin ois Tech home economists ma jors get married while they are still in school or shortly there after," she said. "Perhaps the marriageability quotient is higher because home economists enjoy an added ad vantage of being better equip ped to manage a home." If a girl wants to make a car eer of home economics, Miss Mojonnier said, she can get a starting teaching job at from $3,200 to $3,400 a year. Hospit als and other institutions have offered up to $300 a month, plus maintenance, for trained dieticians. JEWEL STAPLER New York (U.R) The home seamstress now can add her own jewel trim to garments.
