(By Bates). Laceless Shoes Continue Must in Men's Wardrobe There's hardly a man today who doesn't boast a pair of lace less shoes in his wardrobe. In spite of the trend toward more conventional styling in town and business shoes, the ease and comfort of the slip-on continues to appeal. And with high school end college age it's highly popu lar, especially with novelty welt ing and crepe rubber., soles. Combinations of suede and smooth leather are no longer im- Sale of Rubber Plants Approved Washington (U.PJ The House Armed Services Commit tee today voted overwhelming approval of the administration's plan to sell the government's rubber-producing plants to pri vate firms for $310,565,000. The committee voted 27 to 3 against a resolution by Rep. Wright Patman (D-Tex.) to kill the disposal plan. The commit tee also disapproved, 28 to 4, a resolution by Rep. Clyde Doyle (D-Calif.) to kill the proposed ale of three plants in Califor nia to the Shell Chemical Corp. lor $30,000,000. Both resolutions go to the House for a vote next week, Pat man's on .Tuesday and .Doyle's on Wednesday. The sales were recommended by the Rubber Producing Facili ties Disposal Commission. They go through April 30 unless ve toed by Congress by March 25. The government's 24 plants would go to some of the nation's biggest rubber, chemical, and oil companies. portant. Smooth leathers or soft grains are the thing. The moc casin front and the "run-around" are the leaders in the slip-on field, although some copy the U and wing-tip styling of more conventional shoes. The tassel moccasin is still a favorite, especially with young er wearers who seem to like it best in polished black(it can do duty as a party shoe, it seems). And there are wearers who like the laceless shoe with the zipper closing because of the neat trim lin over the instep. In the smooth leathers, black is important for early spring. Deep charcoal is considered smart with dark flannels. The browns and tans of this season are livelier in tone, and cordo van is a hit fashion. - In the cashmere-soft grain leathers the trend toward dark colors is also noticeable, al though these are the leathers that appeal to the school and college set. Black, charcoal .grey or brown and walnut are lead ers. If it's purely a casual shoe, the maple and camel tones may be the thing. Of course, the new lowline look is -& feature. " Lions Club Presents Gold Hill With Cans Gold Hill Three new trash disposal cans have been placed on Main st. in Gold Hill by the Gold Hill Lions club, according to Mayor Harry Smith. The new low cut makes all the difference in the world with a look of men's spring footgear. It's graceful. It's easy. It's light looking. And this light look is complemented by lighter soles, finer detailing, a slimmer silhouette. This is strictly in line with men's fashions which go in very definitely for natural shoulders, easy but not exaggerated body liner., narrower trousers. The whole effect is one of ease, style, let lis even say elegance in the most conventional of town fash ions. And the "low-line" is not re stricted to town fashions. It has affected the whole range of shoes from casual to formal. It makes the high cut shoe look almost as quaint as grandpa's congress gaiters, when worn with spring and summer clothes. Soma Good Examples Here are a few examples to show how widespread is the vogue for the new low cut shoe. The wing tip is still the big ton and business favorite. Also the U and straight vamp. They are conservative, correct, in line ith the trend toward a strict line of demarcation between leisure and town and formal shoes. How ever, they achieve a much smart er, more youthful, more up-to-the-minute look with the new low line. Cooler looking too, in line with summer suits. This new styling prevails in all sorts of materials. Among the leaders in the field, men's shoes in lightweight calfskin, especial ly in two-eyelet design, is a big favorite all over the country, Ths perhaps a little more youth ful than the wing tips. Important also the cordovans which have advanced from util ity to high fashion, partly be cause they are so smart with the blue or grey clothes of spring. These come in wing tips, U wings, moc-overlays and plain toes. There's news in two-eyelet low topline shoes with suede fronts and quarters in calfskin. To be really up-to-the-minute, these make use of such combina tions as contrasting brown tones, or light grey with charcoal. Campus Likes Fashions There's a general feeling that the craze for dark clothes and accessories in the men's field has not yet reached its peak. Lots of men have not yet tried a suit in charcoal gray, black-brown or black-green. Style-makers don't seem to feel that the approach of spring is going to see any let-up in this dark picture for spring town wear and black, charcoal, dark est brown and blue will all be featured. Perhaps it gives added excitement to the colorful cas ual clothes for casual and week end wear. : Youth has adapted these staid fashions with a bang. Look at any college campus for low cut shoes, in black or dark colors, dark suits, black or charcoal raincoats or toppers. In fact, youth was the first to adopt these fashions, "along with the low cut shoe. The moccasin front is now a staple. It too features the new low lines and is most popular in polished leathers, although some prefer the cashmere-soft grains. There are also some suedes trimmed with alligator and liz ard. Bills in Legislature Salem U.R) The Senate has passed two measures looking toward international cooperation in conservation of the Pacific Ocean salmon fisheries by Ore gon, California, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. Sen. Robert D. Holmes (D Gearhart) said the measures were proposed in an effort to conserve the chinook and silver salmon fisheries of vital import ance to the region. One was a House joint resolu tion providing for an interim committee to cooperate with the states, British Columbia and Alaska in drafting a treaty regu lating salmon fishing. The other was a House joint memorial asking the other states, British' Columbia and Alaska to confer on the pro posed treaty. Each measure passed without further discussion. Salem U.R) A resolution for . a Korean veterans' bonus has been sent to the House Taxa tion Committee in a move that supporters of the proposal said was an attempt to kill it. The House voted 40 to 19 to send the resolution back to com mittee. It had previously been reported out of the Joint Ways and Means Committee with a recommendation that it be de feated. Rep. Norman Howard (D Portland) charged that oppon ents of the resolution planned to let it die in committee in the same manner that a bill for a like the more formal shoes, fea ture the slim, trim, tailored look rather than the more casual air. On Youthful Side Also on the youthful side is the plain blucher, a style which caught on several seasons ago and is now stronger than ever with youthful wearers. With the vested choir playing and singing religious and secu lar numbers, and the well train ed sextet from Rogue River Academy offering familiar melo dies, the 50 young musicians gave a lasting impression. The. sextet, consiting of Ruth and Elizabeth Jolliffe, Sail Jo Lindgren, Patty Kennaday, El dene Burgess and Rose Marie Beltz, previewed numbers which will be given on the YMCA pro gram over TV on Sunday. Among the popular accordion selections played at the Camp White concert were "William Tell Overture," "Merry Widow Waltz," Tango Rose," "Japanese Sandman," and "Tico Tico."
