J Bombers Ready To Strike Back Washington (U.R) Ameri ca's intercontinental bombers BUILD UP RESISTANCE BAH! One of the wisest things you can do to escape becoming a tar get for Dneumonia is to take proper care of yourself when you have a cold . . . While winter is upon us (I'm quot ing this pon derous gobble degook from a January, '55, magazine), it Dr. Brady is important to protect your general health . . . get all the sleep you need, eat a balanced diet and avoid ex posure to severe weather unless properly dressed ... your re sistance to colds . . . From the January '54 number of the same magazine I quote a variation of the inanity: Build up your resistance. Respiratory infections are most likely to strike when a person is "run down" or "tired out." So, it is wise to get plenty of rest and sleep, take some exercise, and dress warmly to avoid becoming chilled. Every season since I was a boy in Canandaigua and we Butten ed kids used to collect free alma nacs at the Barker and Sim monds drugstores, the almanac quacks, nostrum mongers, public health commissioners and eke the ever loving corporations have been spreading this bunk about "resistance." It will probably make no dif ference to the eminent authori ties who tell you how to build resistance, but I iterate never theless that no physician or health authority has defined or can define "resistance," apart from immunity, for the simple reason that no such condition or state exists. Moreover, there is no evi dence that being tired out. "run d o w n," wearing insufficient clothing or becoming chilled im pairs in the slightest whatever immunity one has against any particular disease. In one of the quaint preach ments from which I quote ('55) there appears a glimmer of light. "In addition" to eating a bal anced diet and avoiding expos ure to severe weather unless properly dressed, it says, "keep away from anyone already suf fering from a respiratory ail ment." Some twentieth century doc tor must have wormed his way into the conference room where the tycoons were composing the '55 etude. In 1951 the January number of the same magazine carried a page of advice about "colds" by the same corporation, including this: "Avoid people who cough or sneeze carelessly." January 1952 ditto: "Keep away from people .... January 1953 ditto: "Stay away from people . . ." But the January '54 number carried the usual page of "hints for winter health" and even al luded to the body's ability to continue the fight against the in vading "germs," but that time I imagine the fuddy-duddies dis covered the twentieth century stamped, self-addressed envelope and ask for pamphlet BLLY BREATH ING.
