m Med Treasure Nathan Starr Given First Contract for Army Swords Tim was sitting on the steps polishing something something that reflected the light of the sun. "What have you got there?" I asked. "A pig sticker," he said, "form erly known as a hangar," and as if to illustrate, he drew a short sword part way out of its leather, brass-bound scabbard. The blade was a sinister, steel grey color. Tim is in the army and I asked him if he were getting ready for some China duty. "Thafs a thought," he said. "Nuclear weapons could certain ly bring us back to the age of the sword. More likely that of the club, though. Say. Ever hear of a J. Bailey, of Fishkill, New York? "The question is quite per tinent to the subject under dis cussion," he went on, handing SUPPLY. DEMAND GOVERN STAMP VALUE "I wish people would realize," said Frank, a stamp dealer friend cf mine, "that the only thing which governs value is the law of supply and demand." "There are still thousands of people who think that age is the most important factor," Frank said. "Like the other day, a man came in with an envelope mailed In 1842, five years before the country began to put out stamps. "It was a cover carried by the City Despatch Post of New York, a private outfit and one of the best. Not only that, it was a sample of the first adhesive stamp ever used in the United States . . . and in excellent shape. The cancellation marks had not obliterated the portrait of Wash ington I think it was his nor of the words around it, CITY DESPATCH POST THREE CENTS. "Well, naturally, I wanted It, but before I could even make an offer the owner said he would MODERN COUPLE OVERLOOK Bert Young a crack pharma cist, doesn't even look much like his father, the first generation American in the family. He and his wife, Elsie and the children live four or five blocks away from the establishment instead of over it, as his parents did. And the change in their home Is as complete. When I went to dine with them recently, there was only one thing to remind me of their origin a doll which their daughter inadvertently brought in from a bedroom. It was a fascinating doll, al most a foot high. It was made of wood, with a pin, partially concealed by the legs, to enable it to stand. The clothing was splendid, voluminous silks and satins, and hanging down the back was a pigtail. "Don't play with that old thing," said Elsie, a little shrilly. "Get one of your other dolls." The youngster held up the toy to me and I took it. The carven features on the wooden head of the doll delighted me. I exam ined the clothing, toyed with the pigtail, so far forgetting myself 21 FOR SALE. MISCELLANEOUS GIBSON electric steel guitar & Span ish guitar. Small paint spray, com plete with (run. "But this name is Nathan Starr, 1798." I said, reading the inscription. "Sure," replied Tim, "and that's the name of the first man on record to get a contract for swords for the United States Army, back in 1798. "Okay," I said patiently. "But what about this Bailey fellow? Where does he come in?" "Well," Tim looked a little re gretful. "This hangar is worth about $25 with Nathan Starr's name and date on it. But if the name were J. Bailey of Fishkill, N. Y., it would be practically priceless. There's only one with Bailey's name on it, and that's George Washington's battle sword that hangs in the Smith sonian." take $1,000 for it that he had taken it to several other dealers none of whom had one. "I pointed out that the value in the catalogue for such a stamp, on a cover, was only $150. He came right back with the asser tion that plenty of much later stamps were worth many times that amount. "He was right, of course. I tried to explain that for some later stamps there was only one sample, but it didn't do any good. He simply insisted that it Was absurd for his stamp to bring as little as $150." Jack paused. "What did you finally do?" I asked. "I showed him two City Dis patch Post stamps I already had and offered to sell them to him for $150 each they were on covers since he was so sold on them. Naturally, he refused. "In other words, we were both adequately supplied with them, and our chief demand was to find a buyer." VALUE OF OLD CHINA DOLL as to comment upon it. "It's barbaric," Bert said. "The pigtail." Disgust showed on both his and Elsie's faces. Suddenly aware that I had committed a faux pas in men tioning the Oriental hair-do, I fumbled for a way out. "George Washington wore one. Very short. Not his own hair at least, when he was well along in years. But John Paul Jones' was. And besides, this is a valu able doll." "My grandmother brought it from China in 1878," Elsie snif fed. "It was new then." Her voice suggested that it was still far too young to have anything but a possible sentimental value. "I've seen these advertised for $25 $50 even" more," I pro tested as Elsie took it back to the bedroom. I thought that would be the last I would see of it. But when I called on them a week ago, the old doll stood on a table a small Oriental table in a corner under a glass bell.
