Joseph E. Davies' Marriage Breaks Up Washington (U.P.) The breakup of the 20-year marriage of Joseph E. Davies. 78, former ambassador to Russia, and Mrs. Davies, 67, one of the nation's richest women, stunned Wash ington society today. The couple long had been lead ing figures in the capital city's social life, noted for their fabu lous paraes at ootn lregaraon, the 29-acre, garden-filled Davies family estate, and aboard the Sea Cloud, Mrs. Davies' 316-foot yacht. Their marital split had been kept a closely guarded secret un til Mrs. Davies was granted a final divorce decree yesterday in Gooding, Ida., on grounds of mental cruelty and incompatibil- Ashland John Stuckey, Ash land, president - e 1 e c t "of the Southern Oregon College chap ter of the Future Teachers of America has been nominated for the position of vice-president of the Future Teachers of Oregon. Helicopter May Be Available To Public In Future At Cost of Medium-Sized Car $& San Francisco (U.P.) You too will be able to have your own private helicopter for about the price it would cost to buy an automobile. That's the optimistic predic tion of Stanley Hiller Jr., dy namic young president of the Hiller Helicopter Co., of Palo Alto, Calif. Hiller, at 30 a veteran of 14 years in the comparatively in fant industry, tacked a lot of "ifs" on his speculation for the future. But, he said, within the next 15 years his company "con ceivably" could mass produce helicopters which would retail for the cost of a medium priced car. Hiller came to town to ad dress the San Francisco Adver tising club and made an entic ing reference to "a helicopter in every garage" but failed to elab orate on the point. In an interview after the luncheon he talked enthusiastic ally of one, two, three and four place 'copters within the reach of the average citizen by 1970. "But it all depends on the military," he said. "If they con tract us to develop such aircraft further, thus enabling us to tool our plant for the smaller heli capters, the changeover to as sembly line production would be relatively simple." Hiller said his company al ready has designed and made "flying jeeps" and "airborne staff cars" for the Army. With out too much modification, he said, these could be converted for civilian use. "In limited production, this type of aircraft retails for about $30,000 to $40,000," he said. "But when we get them on the assembly line I think they could be marketed for the same price it would cost to buy a Stude baker, for example." Hiller said the present cost per pound for production of a heli copter is $23 whereas it takes only 90 cents a pound to build most autos on an assembly line basis. "Because the helicopter is a vastly simpler machine, I'm con vinced that in mass production we could build one for less than 90 cents a pound," he said. Hiller, a slight, intense man, also spoke glowingly of 60-pass-enger "helicopter busses" in the American future, and he alluded to a top-secret military project now underway at Palo Alto which will result in "the most unconventional lifting device imaginable." He declined to give any de tails, but asked if the device had anything to do with getting the human body airborne with out a conventional helicopter cabin, Hiller replied: "It's something like that. You can just about strap it on your back." Hiller had great confidence in the potential of the helicopter industry, and he said the "least" of his worries was public reluct ance to leave the ground. "We can teach you to solo in one hour," he said. "And once you've flown a helicopter you'll be convinced it's a lot safer than driving a car on the highway." FridT.
