Complaint Investigated Fire Marshal Truman Nelson investi gated one complaint of a hazard ous condition in a residential area yesterday and inspected a hotel and three business occu pancies. He issued five orders for removal of fire hazards. Switch at Fault Firemen who investigated a report of smoke in a storeroom at the Groceteria Food market, Sixth and Grape sts., about 5 p.m. yes terday, said that the cause was a faulty switch in a compressor unit. They said there was no damage. Grange Dance Members of the Phoenix Grange will spon sor a square dance session Sat urday, March 12, at 8:30 p.m., in the Grange hall. The public and all square dancers interested are invited. Women are re quested to take sandwiches for potluck refreshments and the Grange people will serve free coffee. - Visitors Mr. and Mrs. B. Berven, North Vancouver, B.C., have left after being in Medford to visit Eagles lodge sessions. Both are members of the lodge in their city. They are traveling south to Sacramento and Long Beach, Calif., and will return here again March 17 for another visit to the Medford lodge. . Examination Set A federal civil service examination for ap pointment of Veterans Adminisi tration mental hospital attend ant has been announced. Leaving "Curly" Anderson, who has been master of cere monies for the "Crazy Curlys Corral." program on . radio sta tion KMED, is to leave the val ley Saturday, March 12, for Los Angeles. He has accepted a posi tion in the radio field in the Los Angeles area. Here he also has been a member of Vic Flood's orchestra. Promoted Gordon C. Hays, manager of Ashland mortuary, has been promoted from lieu tenant to captain in the 304th logistical command U.S. Army reserve unit at Medford. Hays is the finance officer of the unit. Several vacancies still exist in the unit, according to Col. Wil liam H. Prentice, USAR, com manding officer. Receives Degree George Green, son of Mr. and- Mrs. George S. Green. 1410 Euclid ave., was one of the 66 students who received degrees at winter quarter commencement exer cises March 1 1 at Colorado State college of education, according to a release from the college at Greeley. Colo. He is a Medford High school graduate and he re ceived a bachelor of arts degree with teaching certificate. Suffers Fractures Harry Oliver, Trail, is at Sacred Heart hospital where he was taken yesterday after he suffered ankle and leg fracture while working in the woods for the Elder Lumber company, a hos pital report indicated today. Play Postponed A play orig inally scheduled for March 11 by members of the Talent Par ent Teacher association has been postponed to Friday, March 18. The play, "The Improper Henry Proper." will be staged at the Talent school gymnasium. At Community Four tonsil surgery patients were reported today from Community hospital. Health Program Maturation, a child's mental development in comparison with his physical growth as it affects readiness for school work, will be discussed Sunday a,t 2:30 p.m., by Dr. Loren Messenger of Southern Oregon college on a television program. The program is spon sored by the Jackson County Public Health association. Dr. Phyllis Plichta, health education chairman for the association, will be in charge with three young children being used for the dem onstration. Dr. Messenger is re ported to have many suggestions for parents and teachers as to a Funeral Conducted For Eugene Birk - Ashland Funeral services were held Monday at Litwiller Mountain View chapel here for Eugene Raymond Birk, who died last, week after suffereing in juries during an altercation at the Talent sawmill where he was employed. The Rev. Ross Knotts offi ciated at the services. Interment was in the Ashland cemetery, and pall bearers were Dean Car ver, Harold Allen, Shorty John son, Howard Lockwood,. Jim Perry and John Walsh. Mr. Birk, who resided in Phoenix, was born Oct. 10, 1923, at Gridley, Kan. He was preceded in death by a young sister, in 1927. and by an infant daughter in ,1947. He served 3fc years overseas during World War II, as a first sergeant. A member of the Church of the Brethren since the age of 14, he has lived in Phoenix for 19 years. . . He leaves his wife, Beryl; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Birk, Ph6enix; a sister, Mrs. Rita King, Medford;, a niece, Teresa King; a brother, Clifford, Yuma, Ariz., and a number of relatives in Kansas.
