The New York Yankees "pennant-winning"
winter deal with
the Baltimore Orioles looked
like a $250,000 lemon today in
the wak of the most humiliating
Grapefruit league opener in
their spring training history.
With Bob Turley, the key man
in the massive, 16-player trans
action, treated like a batting
practice pitcher, the Yankees
were crushed 7-0 Thursday by a
St. Louis Cardinal team compos
ed of Stan Musial and eight roo
kies. What's more the proud
New Yorkers were limited to
just one hit an infield dribbler
by a quartet of rookie pitchers
without a single inning of major
league experience among them.
The Cardinals, meanwhile,
rocked Turley for seven runs
and eight hits in three innings.
The big fireballer struck out
two batters but he walked three
and three of the hits he yielded
went for extra bases.
California Commission
Requested To Recognize
Raul Macias as Champ

thony Petronella, president of
the National Boxing Association,
has asked the California Ath
letic Commission to recognize
Raul Macias of Mexico as ban
tamweight champion.
Macias won the NBA title by
stopping Chamrern Songkitrat in
the 11th round of a 12-round
fight Wednesday night in San
Francisco's Cow Palace.
The California commission re
fused to recognize the bout as a
title affair. However, Petronella
asked it yesterday to reconsider.

HILT GRADERS HAVE FINE RECORD Residents of the
Hilt, Calif., community just south of the Oregon border are
proud of their elementary school basketball aggregation. The
team has compiled a record this season of 22 wins against a
single loss. For the second consecutive year the club swept
the small school class of the Siskiyou County league, the
Yreka tournament and the Alturas tournament. Kneeling, left

Eagle Point A "repeat" of
the play-off for the Little Six
sub-district prep title is slated
tonight in one of two semi-final
games at 8:15 o'clock in the
Eagle Point Independent basket
ball tournament.
Burelson's of Central Point
will meet the Eagle Point Let
termen and Butte Falls will face
the Eagle Point town quint in
simultaneous frays on cross
courts. Eagle Point Lettermen
team is composed of EP high
varsity players and Burelson's
has Fred Hogue, Vern Parent
and Jim Higinbotham from
Crater high.
Two consolation scuffles will
be contested at 7 o'clock tonight
on cross-courts Eagle Point Out
laws will play the Prospect Let
termen and National Guard
Headquarters company, Med-,
ford, takes on the Prospect town
team.
Three games will be played
Saturday with the consolation
finals at 6 p.m., third place mix
about 7:15 p.m. and the cham
pionship game about 8:30 p.m.
They will be played on the full
court.
Thursday games saw Burel
son's crush the Outlaws 60 to 24,
Eagle Point Letterman club the
Prospect Lettermen 72 to 41,
Butte I Falls bounce National
Guard' 66 to 43 and Eagle Point
townies nip Prospect townies
58 to 56.

For Trapshooters
Medford Gun club will shoot
against five "first class" clubs
this Sunday week in the second
round -of the Oregon Journal
telegraphic trapshoot
The foes will be Oregon City,
Pendleton-Pilot Rock, Portland,
Redmond and Roseburg.
Medford with a 74 was in sec
ond place overall last week but
figures to need three perfect
scores of 25 each for a 75 count
this time to keep pace with its
top-rated rivals.
There also will be firing in
the Pendleton East Oregonian
telegraphic skeet shoot. Both
skeet and 16-yard trapshooting
practice are planned. Traps will
open around 10 a.m.
