Much of the material is classified, which is proper, of course. But one Army officer had a sign painted for press head quarters which read: "If it isn't classified, it isn't a story." My friend didn't say whether the officer got away with his little joke. But the agent did vouch for this one: Army men are known with affection as "dogfaces." Around his neck the pooch wore a completely valid AEC pass sealed in plastic and with a mug photo showing bared fangs. The badge bore the dog's name and his 'organization." Incidentally, the dogs at Camp Desert Rock don't exactly lead the life of Riley, like they're supposed to in the Army, accord ing to my friend. Sure the soldiers pet and feed them and welcome them as friends. But the ground is rocky. Combat boots wear out quickly and blisters appear on a man's heels. On the dogs, havoc is played with the paws. The boys tried bandages, but they kept slipping off and wore out too fast. . Marines Need Help Overnight, the problem was solved. A soldier went to Las Vegas on pass and visited a sporting goods shop. There he bought some of those leather covers that golfers use to pro tect their woods against the weather. The dogs were pretty happy about it. The Marines, for once, had to lean on the Army. The Leath ernecks arrived at the maneu vers, but the situation was far from in hand. A violent wind storm greeted them and they had a dickens of a time putting up their kitchen tents. Those who tried it found themselves being dragged across the premises try ing to hang on to the billowing canvas. When the storm finally let up, the pooped Marines stood aside while Army engineers put up the tents. The GI, my agent would have you know, called on his ingenu ity to solve a problem at the camp. For insulating field ice boxes, the Army used roots of the Yucca plant, native to the area. The boxes were dug into the rocky terrain, leaving only the tops at ground level. A small ice box was fitted into the larger one and the Yucca, roots .were chopped up and packed between the two for insulation. It worked fine. Thursday. Jealousy- Can't Be Eliminated Entirely It is Certainly true that telling a child ahead of time that there will be a new baby in the fam ily helps cushion the shock. But this is far from enough to ward off jealousy. (Q) "I just don't understand my son, Stevie. He is three years old and seemed delight ed when I told him we were haying a new baby. I even lold him that he could help ma lake care of the new baby, and I have kept my word. But there are limes when he seems to resent this baby, who is now two months old. He says nasty things about him some times, refuses lo help me when I need his help, such as get ling a towel when I am bath ing lhe baby, and seems very spiteful about all I do for lhe baby. I Ihoughl psychologist claimed that a child would not be jealous if he were prepared ahead of lime for a new arrival." (A) Psychologists do claim that the older child's jealousy will be lessened if there is prep- ation for a new baby. I know of no psycholo gist who claims there will be no jealousy at all. In fact, they all main tain that some jealousy in a family is nor mal and can- noi oe eliminated any more than it can outside the home, in school, on the playground, or even in the social and business lives of adults. You have given your son some preparation for the new arrival, but your preparation, as you describe it, was far from adequate. How could Stevie know, with the limited experi ence of a three-year-old, what it actually meant to have a new baby in a home? Could he, for example, antici pate how much of your time the new baby would take? Could he realize that he would have to share your attention and love with the new baby? And could he anticipate that he would have to wait for several years before this new baby would be a play mate for him? You painted such a rosy picture for him in your "preparation" that the let-down has been hard for him to under stand, much less take. .
