The Gand his remained married for over sixty years and were the parents of four sons. Horses & Women When women get together, what is the major subject of their conversation? It is, of course, men. Recent research, in dicates at all feminine gather ings 50 per cent of the conversa tion concerns men, 15 per cent, clothes, 10 per cent children, and 5 per cent each, beauty treatments, movies (including TV) and housekeeping. Accord ing to our Horses & Women ex perts the aforementioned figures seem accurate except as to the conversation dealing with men. They say it should be 60 per cent. That is the national aver age. In Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Seattle it is 70 per cent. In the Borough of the Bronx, New York, it is 85 per cent. Bronx women think and talk about men more than the females in any other section of the United States. Passing By Gene T u n n e y. Millionaire businessman. Once a heavy weight boxing champion of all the world. It has been frequent ly said that while Gene was a clever boxer he was not a hard hitter. That's wrong. Tunney was one of the hardest hitters ever to step into the squared circle. Harry Greb, who fought Gene five times, once said, "That Tunney slings a right that tears your insides out." Cole Porter's first published composition. which he wrote when 11, was titled "The Bobolink Waltz." A copy of that certainly should be a collector's item.' . ... Among the Married Have you been' married ten years or more? Did your wife save her wedding gown or the dress she was married in? Does it still fit her? That is, has she retained the same measure ments she had on her wedding day? In brief, has she a "bride's figure?" I know a woman, mar ried twenty years, who has same measurements as on her wedding day. Says she managed to keep her figure the same for twenty years by bending down and touching her toes twelve times daily. Asides More Brooklynites participat ed in World War II than natives or residents of any other bor ough or city in the United States. Pipes is a medical patient at a Medford hospital, By J. HUGH PRUETT Astronomer, Extension Division Oregon Higher Education System This is the month when spring is scheduled to begin. The cor ner will be turned from winter on March 21 at 1:36 a.m. (PST). Over the entire earth the sun will them be above the horizon for practically 12 hours. This date marks the vernal equinox. Those who enjoy early rising can still see glorious Venus low in the southeast in the dawn. This planet has faded slightly in brilliance since the first of the year. Mercury is lower, far ther east and of much lesser brghtness. Yellow, non-twinkling Saturn can be spotted well up in the southeast. . Jupiler in Splendor For evening study of bright stars and planets, let us observe at about 8 p.m. Only slightly south of the zenith (overhead point) the planet Jupiter glows in splendor. The planet Mars is still in the evening sky and will be seen as a red object, not un usually bright, fairly well up above the west point of the horizon. Orion is still the finest star group at our observing hour. This splendid constellation is fairly high in the sky, in the south-southwest. It is easily spot ted by the short line of three equally bright, evenly spaced stars which mark the hero's belt. Above the belt note the two bright stars in his shoulders. The brighter is Betelgeuse, red dish in color. Below the belt, the brighter star is Rigel. The line of faint stars hanging from the left side of the belt is Orion's sword. High in the west the tiny group of a few faint stars form the Pleiades (Plee-ya-deez). Be tween the Pleiades and Orion, the V of Hayades (Hi-a-deez) is easily located. The V is standing upright. All its stars are faint with the exception of orange Aldebaran at the top of the left branch of the letter. Capella Glittering Only a little west of the zenith the fine, yellow Capella is glit tering. This is the same type of star as our sun. Note the small triangle of stars, the Kids, near Capella. . About due south the brightest of all real stars, Sirius, in the Big Dog, is sparkling energeti cally. Higher, the fainter Pro syon in the Little Dog is easily found. The eastern half of the sky at this hour can boast of only two bright stars. One is Regulus, high in the east-southeast. Regu lus is at the end of the handle of the celestial Sickle. The curved blade, made up of rather faint stars, can easily be traced a little higher and to the left of the handle. The curve is open About 130 people attended a meeting of the Northwestern Mining council here Thursday evening. The discussion was de voted largely to uranium and manganese, and their discovery and development opportunities. A. C. Van Galder, Jackson ville, discussed uranium produc tion in Colorado in which he and other local people are inter ested. They expect to start ship ping from seven properties in the near future, he said, and he went on to describe methods of uranium prospecting used, and the formations in which it is like ly to occur. Displays Samples He displayed a number of ore samples from the Colorado prop erties, showing how they show up in Gieger counter and black light reactions. Some local spec imens of ore also were shown. Van Galder emphasized the need for careful check of owner ship rights on areas where dis covery is made. He added that the Atomic Energy commission is cooperative with those discov ering ore, and usually will have a representative on the ground within 48 hours. Geiger counters and scintil lators were shown and demon strated by John Garner of Cal Ore Machinery company and E. R. Santo of Santo's Agate shop. Discuss Manganese Bruce Manley spoke on man ganese ores, telling of the uses for the metal, and of the types of ore common in this area. Al though U. S. consumption is some 700,000 tons annually, little is produced in this country because of foreign competition, he said. Manley also reported on a recent meeting of the Colorado MAKES LONG LINE All the cars and trucks ex ported from New York harbor each year,- placed end to end, would stretch from Manhattan to Indianapolis, says the Nation al Geographic Society. The speaker em phasized that a strong mining as sociation is vital to mineral pro duction. ' Clark Anderson, secretary of the Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral club, attended, and reported on plans for the gem and mineral display to be held here in June. He said exhibits will come here from all Oregon clubs1 and sev eral in California. Harry Marx, president of the club, was intro duced and invited members of the council to participate in the show. Frank DeSouza, president of the council, presided. Bang's Testing Program Started A federal program for testing of all beef cattle for Brucellosis (bang's disease) is now under way in Jackson county, according to W. B. Tucker, county agent. The program is on 'a voluntary basis at no cost to the cattle owner and all veterinarians in the county have been authorized to make the tests, Tucker said. . Beef heifer calves between the ages of six and 12 months may be vaccinated against the disease, also at no cost, it was stated. Herd owners are asked to con tact the veterinarian of their choice to have the tests made. The program has the approval of the Jackson County Stock men's association and the county court requested it in formal action last month. Dr. A. G. Rising just about now in the east-northeast is the scintillating orange Arcturus. This star is at the base of the Kite, a figure of fainter stars now lying on its side with the top toward the left. .
