TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAH. TRIBUNE - Thursday, March 3, 1935 On The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) It is a fearful thine to love As I lov. you. I have no hope that does not dream of yon. No Joy that is not nhared by you. My hours are spent in shapinc our future lives After my own romantic fantasies. You are "the star 'round which my thoughts revolve Like satellites. Letitia Landon. College football coaches of today frequently refer to their players as "my kids or tnose kids." A nauseating reference When a fellow enters college he is a man, a scholar and a gentle man. Or should be. Boys became men much quicker in the yester year. Take "Bat" Masterson, celebrated gun fighter and peace officer of the old West. Bat was in turn marshal, deputy shriff and sheriff of Dodge City before h was 21. When "Bat" was driving those bad men from Texas away from Kaansas and SF Waterfront Building Leveled San Francisco (U.R) A spectacular fire destroyed an ab andoned Pacific Gas and Elec trie company building on the San Francisco waterfront early today. The blaze, which sent a show er of sparks high into the air; threatened a Navy ship, a gas storage area and the Columbia Machinery company before it was broucht under control. The Navy vessel, which was berthed alongside the fire area, helped fight the fire until it was under control. The ship then cast off and moved out of the bay. There was no immediate report of injuries. The fire occurred in the Po trero Point district of San Fran cisco's industrial section. Hardware Store Scene of Weddings McAlester, Okla.- (U.R) A lo cal hardware store owner, Har race Collier, is . fast becoming popular in launching marriages. Collier has twice turned his store into a wedding chapel, complete with altar and potted plants. He has encouraged local merchants to join him in show ering the couples with household gifts, including kitchen equip ment, linens and groceries. ' The 56-year-old merchant said he started his novel practice one day when an engaged couple were in his store discussing their coming marriage. Collier asked where they were going to get married, and the young man replied that they were undecided. They couldn't afford a big wedding. "Why not have the ceremony here?" the businessman said. Collier said now they have a baby and a happy home, and he feels that the sense of security given them by the help from the merchants has been an impor tant factor in putting the mar riage on a firm foundation. Collier believes struggling young couples faced with modest salaries and spiraling living costs need some help in setting up housekeeping. He said he has drawn no criti cism from local churches. Col lier's main problem is finding -room for the crowds that attend the weddings. "Anybody who wants to come is welcome," he said, "as long as they bring a household gift of some kind." back to the Lone Star state he was only 20. . Asides Mother doesn't always know best and father isn't invariably right when it comes to choosing a career for one of their off spring. Liberace's parents wanted him to be an undertaker . . . Christian Dior, who must certainly be accepted as an au thority on the subject said, "the knee is 'the ugliest spot of a woman's anatomy." Sidelights Am always interested in news paper columnsw ith quaint titles. As for example I saw one in an Omaha (Neb.) paper titled "Omaha Through a Keyhole." In another city in the Middle West I read a column headed, "Doing the Town With Daisy" . . It was none other than Nietzsche who said, "Stupidity in a woman is unfeminine." How right he was! No matter what appearances may be, a dumb dame is a rarity! Asking Queries from clients. Q. Am tired of being embarrassed by the way my husband looks in a bathing suit. How and where can I get this bulgy character streamlined? A. Eliminate sec ond helpings of food. Buy him a form compressor but be careful to refer to it as a "health belt" and not "a girdle." Have a phy sician check on how much weight reduction threatment he can stand. Have him given a course in "spot reduction" treat ment. This calls for eliminating that midriff bulge facetiously re ferred to as "a pot belly" cr a "corporation." To keep his pro gress or lack of it impressed on him, measure his waist line and weigh him every day. Keep the daily record of this on a chart hung above the bathroom scales. Horses and Women ' The . world's most beautiful red haired women are of Nor wegian birth or descent. They are descendants of Eric the Red, the Norwegian navigator. An ex ample is Arlene Dahl, the shape ly, sexy, scintillating screen siren. So says an erstwhile resi dent of Oslo, Norway. He fur ther maintains the most beautiful Irish redheads are also direct descendants of Eric the Red. He characterizes the claim that the world's most glamorous red heads are in Scotland as "utterly ridiculous." He says any day on any street in Oslo you can see more beautiful redheads than in ten years in all of Edinburgh. Canada's herds of caribou are being cut down by wolves, hunt ers, disease and scarcity of for age faster than nature can re place the losses, says the Nation al Geographic Sccijty. To in crease the stock? the Canadian government has imported rein deer from Siberia by way of Alaska and brought herdsmen from Lapland to teach nomadic Eskimos the art of the deer's domestic care. Back Stairs: Eisenhower and Pigeons By MERRIMAN SMITH UP White House Writer Washington (U.R) Back stairs at "the White House: President Eisenhower's bel ligerent attitude toward "those dirty pigeons" circling over his freshly painted Gettysburg farm house brought forth a story from a former associate. An old Army buddy, who must remain unidentified be cause he still is in the service, says that when Mr! Eisenhower was Army chief of staff he pre- Animals Recruited As Aircraft Pickets Riverside, Calif. (U.R) Strik ing workers at Rohr Aircraft Company, limited by a court in junction as to the number of pickets they may use, discover ed a loophole in the ruling. Since the injunction failed to specify a picket as a human being, they recruited camels, ele phants and other circus animals for the strike line to add a little weight to their argument. Three Presidents of the Unit ed States were bom in North Carolina. They were Johnson, Jackson and Polk. . pared an order that all squirrels be removed from the premises at Fort Myer, Va. , The Eisenhowers had quarters then at the Army installation near the Pentagon and the chief of staff, for some reason which now escapes his Army pal, took a keen dislike to the abundant squirrels. At any rate, so the stery goes, some of Mr. Eisenhower's friends prevailed on him not to put the order into effect lest squirrel lovers the country oyer take a hostile and hurt attitude toward his anti-squirrel policy. If the President felt strongly against squirrels when he was chief of staff, he must have cooled off by now. The White House grounds constitute just about the city's -most active and well-populated squirrel colony. There are a lot of pigeons on the sidewalks around the White House, too. Thy'd be wise to work some other territory for the time being. The White House pigeons might even send an envoy to the Gettysburg branch of the lodge to tell those birds up there to lay off the Eisen hower farmhouse if they want to keep flying. Organizations that want the President as a Saturday night banquet guest had better make hay while the sun isn't shining. Once the Gettysburg house is ready for occupancy, he'll be hard to nab as an honor guest on a week end. A prominent organization re cently got turned down by the White House for a Saturday in May, The President offered to a Saturday. accept for a Thursday, but not I'd join you." When the President posed for pictures this week with the win ners of the annual science talent search some of the high school boys and girls sat on the floor at Mr. Eisenhower's feet. The President sat sedately in a chair. He looked down at the kids on the floor and said with a'smile, "If I were young enough. CEREAL NOW BETTER THAN EVER!
