Fishing Before Work If a person wants to succeed In business he must follow the tried-and-true maxim, "Business before pleasure." Even though we are living in prosperous times, when work is plentiful, few employers are wil ing to pay a man for work he does not do. Your husband's cut ting short the work week will not help him hold a job or to ad vance in any job he is lucky enough to keep. He must settle down and give up some of the pleasures he en joyed as a boy. He has to realize, sooner or later, that he cannot support a family by playing golf and fishing with his pals. Perhaps his father and your father could impress this upon his mind better than you ' have been able to do. Central Point Bond Issue Sold To Pay For New Building Central Point The low bid, of 2VS per cent itnerest, on the sale of a $20,000 bond issue by the city of Central Point was ac cepted by the council this week. Money from the sale will be used, a construct a new fire hall and li brary building. U. S. National Bank of Port land was the successful bidder. The bid will result in a cost of $3,208 to the city for the life of the issue. The effective interest rate was 2.467 per cent. Two Other Bidders Other bidders were First Na tional Bank of Portland, 23A per cent, and Charles M.Trip and June S. Jones, Portland, 3 V4 per cent. , In other business, the recorder was authorized by the council to contact the firm of John Cun ningham and associates, Port land, consulting engineers, for an estimate on a comprehensive survey of the city's current and future water needs. The action was taken, to follow up the re quest by the Elk City Water dis trict for the city to help fin ance construction of a trunk wa ter main from Medford to Cen tral Point. Plan Common Number Jack Creager, local manager of Pacific Telephone, appeared before the council and discussed plans for a common telephone number for the city and rural fire departments to use, with the rural department sound ing the city's alarm. The city's alarm. The council moved to meet with telephone' and rural district officials to work out an agreement along the lines sug gested. Although no formal applica tion had been made, the city informally expressed a negative vote towards a proposal for re opening the Fireside inn under new management and name. The vote was 4 to 2 against the proposal. Baldock Eyes Program Of Interstate Highways Portland (U.R) State High way Engineer R. H. Baldock said yesterday President Eisen hower's. road,building-.jjrogram- would haveito furnish $2,550,000 of this with the federal govern ment providing the rest, mostly from sale of revenue bonds. Withholding Tax Increase Approved Salem (U.R) The House Taxation -Committee -yesterday voted in favor of increasing the state withholding tax on income from one per cent to two per cent. . The committee also favored including farm labor under the withohlding tax. Thi members said, would bring in money from transient farm, laborers who now escape state : income taxes. Mother Faces Trial In Slaying of Child Chickasha, Okla. (U.R) County Attorney' William Smithen has announced that Mrs. Flora Giddings will be returned here immediately from Central State Mental Hospital at Nor man, Okla., for trial on charges she beat her six-year-old son to death. . The former Dinuba, Calif., woman was declared sane after an examination. : Mrs. Giddings is charged joint ly with her common-law hus band, Jack Shinault, with caus ing the death of her son, Jack Giddings, by beating him with a belt buckle and stomping him. She told officers she beat the boy because he reminded her of her divorced husband, James Giddings of Dinuba. McMinnville (U.R) Ground breaking ceremonies will be held Friday for construction of a $450,000 student recreation and gymnasium building at Linfield College here. Salem Bank OKs Merger With U. S. National Portland 0J.PJ Stockholders and directors of Salem's Wil lamette Valley Bank have ap proved a merger with U. S. Na tional Bank of Portland. E. C. Sammons, president 'of U. S. National, said the merger was expected to become effec tive about the middle of this month. Alaska is about one - fifth as large in area as the contin ental United States.
