American -Priest Ordered To Leave Russia by March 5 Moscow 'MR) Father Georges Eissonnette, the Amer ican priest ordered out of the Soviet Union by March 5, burst into tears today so broken up he was almost unable to cele brate his last mass in Russia. The 33-year-old priest ol Cen tral Falls, R.I., bade an emo tional farewell to his little flock of Roman Catholic faithful in Moscow's diplomatic colony in Goldberg Device Burns House Down Tokyo U.R) Kanekichi Hashimoto, 55-year-old welder with an inventive turn of mind, was held today on arson charges for burning down his house for insurance with an invention that depended on a cat's liking for fish. Hashimoto, wishing to be ab sent when the fire started, put a pail of gasoline in a closet, set an electric heater on top of the pail, placed a celluloid soap box on the heater, connected a switch to the heater, ran a long cord outside the house and at tached a piece of dried fish to the end of the cord. The Rube Goldberg device worked perfectly according to police (1) A stray cat tugged at the fish, (2) pulling the cord which, (3) snapped on the heat er which, (4) ignited the soap box which, (5) fell into the gas oline which, (6) ignited and burned the house down. Hashimoto's work was in vain, however, for police caught up with him. Klamath Youths Revive Stricken Dog Klamath Falls (U.R) A Cocker spaniel dog today had two teen-age boys, to thank for saving his life after he had been given up for dead. The dog, family pet at the home - of Tom B. Dunn, was overcome by fumes when a floor furnace exploded last night. Firemen quickly put out the fire. But the dog was believed dead. Two boys who happened by spotted the apparently life less animal and applied artifi cial respiration for more than 30 minutes. - The dog responded and today was a chipper as everf The boys wandered off before firemen could get their names. Trailer Owners Set Meeting on Saturday All frailer owners of the area have been invited to a meeting of the Organized Trailer Owners of Jackson and Josephine coun ties Saturday, it was announced today. The meeting will be at the Valley Center Trailer court, 2410 North Pacific Highway, Medford, at 7:30 p.m. Attorney Edward C. Kelly, who was retained by the group to draw up a bill providing for changes in the taxation of trailer homes, and to present it to the legislature, will report on his trip, to Salem to present the bill. the midst of his hasty packing to observe the government's ex pulsion order. No Explanation Father Bissonnette, a member of the Order of the Assumption ist Fathers, who serves Catholic Americans and other foreigners in Moscow, was ordered Wed nesday to leave the Soviet Un ion. There was no explanation and at first he could make no comment at all. Some 20 American, French and Mexican Catholics crowded into his apartment-chapel today where he had ministered to west erners under a special Anglo Soviet agreement as the only foreign priest in the Soviet Un ion. The kneeling diplomats and their wives and children filled the chapel and overflowed into the priest's living room as he struggled to complete the rite, his face twisted and tears roll ing down his cheeks. Father Bissonnette was call ed in by police Wednesday night and informed he must leave within four days. He began packing immediately and said he probably would leave by train tonight via Leningrad and the border point of Vigor on the Finnish frontier. Replacement Expected In Washington, American of ficials said they expected Rus sia to let another priest replace him, following a pattern they set in 1949. At that time they refused to allow the American priest then assigned to Moscow to return to his post from a brief trip outside the Soviet Union. The American officials said Fr. Louis F. Dion would apply soon for permission to enter the Soviet Union. Plans already had been made for Dion to re place Bissonnette this spring. New Management Opens Dardanelle The reopening under new management of Dardenelle din ing inn near Gold Hill was an nounced today. The manager, George (Casey) Winkleman, re cently arrived here from Mt. Shasta, Calif., and he has en gaged August Bruyneel as chef. Both make their homes in Med ford. The dining inn has recently been renovated, an additional banquet and party room, which will serve up to 150 persons, has been completed. The man agement, in addition to catering to regular dinner business, in cluding family dinners, will specialize in banquets, meetings, and wedding groups. The inn also has a dance floor and lounge. The business cpens at 5 p.m., week days and at 2 p.m. Sundays. Paperhangers once signed their names on the walls they covered to date their handiwork. Spruce Budworm Control Funds Urged Washington (U.R) The House Appropriations commit tee was urged today by Rep. Sam Coon of Baker to grant supplemental appropriations of $500,000 for control of spruce budworm in six eastern Oregon counties. Coon told a . subcommittee of the group that continued effort is needed to eradicate the for est pest. Infested area in Ore gon contain timber valued at $12,500,000, he said. . Control units are proposed for areas of Baker, Union, Jeffer son, Crook, Grant and Wheeler counties with units in Ochoco, Malheur and Whitman, Wal lowa national forests. Thursdays March 3. 1953 . But there is really nothing mysterious about anhydrous ammonia. The men who man ufacture it would be the first to tell you that it is simply a fer tilizer perhaps the best yet de veloped, but a fertilizer nonethe less. Farmers claim that its use not only improves the quality of their crops but doubles or triples yields, which eventually 6hould mean lower food prices. The reason anhydrous am monia is so important to crops is that 82 per cent of its weight is nitrogen, and nitrogen is one of three essentials for plant growth. The other two are phosphates and potash. There are other forms of nitro gen fertilizer, but there is nearly twice -as much usable nitrogen per pound- in anhydrous am monia than in any other product. Quick Growth Perhaps the best indication of the impact anhydrous ammonia has had on agriculture is the way this young industry has grown. Prior to 1946, anhydrous am- Harvey Matusow Also Poet, Senate Told Washington (U.R) In addi tion to being a nightclub enter tainer, author, inventor of a "stringless yo-yo" and a self-confessed liar about Communism, Harvey Matusow is a poet. He revealed this to the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee tee Wednesday when he said he had written a poenv about the atom bomb entitled "For Whom The Boom Dooms." monia was more or less a labor atory plaything. It had been used in California's citrus groves, where researchers poured it into the water in irrigation canals. But the direct application of anhydrous ammonia didn't Btart until 1946, when Dr. W. B. An drews of Memphis State College perfected a device that made di rect application possible. A short time later, the use of anhydrous ammonia was recom mended to farmers in the Missis sippi Delta, one of the top farm ing areas in the state of Missis sippi. After that, this new meth od of fertilizing crops spread from coast to coast and is now used in at least 40 states, Puerto Rico and Hawaii.' There are ow 24 anhydrous am monia plants scattered through out the nation, and 17 others are under construction or are planned. Supply Problems Virtually all of this has taken place in the nine-year-period since Andrews perfected the de vice that places the liquid in the ground. . , Despite the industry's mush room growth and steady increase in productive capacity, there still isn't enough of the fertilizer : to meet the demands. ; In Mississippi, the consump tion of anhydrous ammonia has held at a more or less steady level since 1950. This levelling off, was due partially to the short supply and the competition of new customers in other states. There are other problems which are slowly being licked. Nitrogen must be stored under pressure in tanks, much like nat ural gas tanks, and there has been a limited storage capacity, both on the farm and at dealer supply points. In the two-and-a-half -year, pe riod last June, the nation's total synthetic ammonia productive capacity was increased 67 per cent, but industry leaders say "the surface has only been scratched.?
