"I wonder," said the camera man dreamily, "If he got all this on a GI loan?" Roberta Barrows who for many years has been the main spring of the White House ap pointment secretary's office, has been transferred quietly to oth er duties. Miss Barrows came to the White House first during the Hoover administration. Under F.D.R., then Mr. Truman and finally, the first two years of the Eisenhower administration. She was the girl Friday to who ever happened to be serving as appointment secretary. When Thomas E. Stephens was succeeded recently by Bernard M. Shanley as Mr. Eisenhower's appointment man, however, Ro berta was shifted to other White House duties. She now is work ing for Joseph M. Dodge, Mr. Eisenhower's specialist on for eign economic trade policy. WORLD HIGKTS EESERVED back in the corner of the ap pointment secretary's office. Tense moment at the Presi dent's Gettysburg farm last Sat urday. The chief executive was walk ing over the farm property with Col. Tom Belshe, an old Wash ington friend. They passed a small masonry structure. The President, quite within earshot of reporters and photo graphers, said to Belshe with a wave toward the small building, "The Secret Service will use that until I . . . " The thiee press association newsmen standing near Mr. Eis enhower felt like screaming, "Go ahead and finish the sen tence." But they didn't. Recent additions to the Eisen hower farm: A four-car garage attached to the barn. A floodlight system in the grounds. And, in the process of instal lation, a photo-electric alarm system. The Roosevelt estate at Hyde Park, N. Y., and the Truman home at Independence, Mo., both Inscription Startles Operating Surgeon Muskegon, Mich. (U.R) It wasn't the operation that star tled a Hackley hospital doctor, but the inscription on a heavy dinner fork he removed from a 16-year-old girl's stomach. The fork was inscribed "Mercy Hos pital." Wilma Herman, who still doesn't know how she swallowed the fork, said she got it from a brother who tours Muskegon in stitutions collecting garbage for his hogs. Any discarded silver he finds in the garbage, he gives to his relatives. The doctor who removed the fork from Wilma's stomach said the operation was a fairly sim ple one. He thinks the girl got the entire fork into her mouth and then slipped to the floor. The jar of falling to the floor was enough to send the fork down her throat and into her stomach. Scientists Study Hibernating Animals Madison, Wis. (U.R) Two University of Wisconsin scien tists have looked into some of the mystery of how hibernating animals stay alive when their body temperature drops nears freezing. , Scientists have wondered for some time why the hearts of hi bernators do not stop when the animals get real cold. The hearts of other animals stop long before reaching the temp eratures at which hibernators spend the winter. Profs. Peter R. Morrison and A. R. Dawe have learned in la boratory tests that hibernating animals have super-sensitive hearts. The slightest stimulus will cause them to beat furious ly at near-normal temperatures. In deep hiberation the heart rate slows to as few as 2.2 beats per minute, they said. The scientists said their study conceivably could lead to prac tical application in human "deep-freeze" heart surgery, if they could learn what causes the super-sensitive hearts. Electroni cally, these systems are fine. At Hyde Park, however, ani mals from the woods on the Roosevelt estate were forever setting off the alarm by leaping through the electric eye beams. And at Independence, neighbor hood dogs sometimes set off the alarm by casting their shadows across the never-sleeping elec tric eyes. The Gettysburg house is now guarded around the clock, even when the Eisenhowers are not there, by uniformed police de tailed from the Treasury depart ment. Comdr. Edward L. Beach, Mr. Eisenhower's naval aide, has a novel upcoming, a stirring story of World War II life in the sub marines. Part of it appears in the current Collier's magazine. TOO BIG FOR JOB Columbia, Miss. U.R) Sher iff J. V. Polk, a 215 pounder, found he was not fitted for part of his work. He had to call in 170-pound Deputy Ray Loftin to squeeze through a narrow trap dor and bring out 14 gallons and 150 half-pints of concealed ille gal whiskey.
