International) Nature, Science Block India In Attempt To Monopolize Drug By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York fU.R) Nature and science have thrown a double block on India in its attempt to Medford Students Take Part in IRL Conclave at U.O. Ten Medford students partici pated Feb. 24 through 26 in an International Relations league conference held at the Univer sity of Oregon Campus. Thirty seven Oregon high schools were represented. From Medford were Deanna Campbell, Sue DeVoe, Meredith Foote, Pat-Hanson, -Nancy Me Keown, Marilyn Olsen, Kaye Christian, Ed Manley, Don Rob inson, and John Van Dyke. They were accompanied by their ad visor, Mrs. Jo Anne Smith. U.N. Theme of Meeting Theme of the meeting was "The UN Problems and Pros pects." Eighteen roundtable discus sions were conducted. Don Rob inson led the discussion group concerning technical assistance. John Van Dyke was secretary for the group on membership of the UN. The students and advisor made the trip by a chartered Greyhound bus which also car ried IRL representatives from Jacksonville, Crater and Grants Pass high schools. A full report of the meeting will be made by the Medford students over local radio sta tions and KBES-TV. Panel of Experts The panel of experts there for the sessions included the Rev. Wesley Nicholsen, a Eugene minister; Dr. E. S. Wengert, head of the University of Oregon po litical science department. Dr. Surindar Suri, Indian scholar, who will appear here this eve ning as speaker for the Medford chapter, Oregon United Nations association, and who spoke for Medford Rotary club members today; and Dr. Ruth Widmayer, executive secretary of IRL. But an American pharmaceu tical house now is extracting reserpine on a commercial scale from rauwolfia heterophylla which is a kind of botanical first cousin of the Indian plant and grows abundantly in Central America, from Mexico south ward. Furthermore, chemists now are close enough to understand ing the chemical make-up of rauwolfia that it shouldn't be long before they are making it themselves in laboratories, the United Press learned. Feat Duplicated Reserpine was isolated from the Central American rauwolfia first in Brazil. Dr. Francis A. Hochstein and his associates in the Charles Pfizer research lab oratories duplicted that feat and put it on a commercial basis; they also found that rauwolfia heterophylla contains six other basic chemical compounds which are in rauwolfia serpentina plus a brand new one. What these other rauwolfia compounds do to and for the human body is not known pre cisely, but since reserpine has such dramatic effects, which are not fully understood, the possi bility is plain that the related compounds are laden with poten cies, too. In Widespread Use Reserpine is a calmer-downer, a "tranquillizer." It has come into widespread use by physi cians for some varieties of high blood pressure, and it is excit ing the world of psychiatry by its calming effects on some kinds of mental patients.
