THE DAMP BASEMENT OBSESSION Dr. Brady In the spring the daily mail seldom fails to bring a .few queries from the people who are worried about the damp basement or about harmful effects of liv ing, working or playing on con crete, tile or asphalt floors. L e s t in corrigible fuss budgets com plain of my constant harping I had better say nothing about the belief of physicians and laymen a hundred years ago that malaria was due to noxious effluvia or miasma in the air, especially in . night air near a swamp, and pneumonia was due to change of weather, drafts, wet feet, insufficient clothing and the like you see, the Plas modium (parasite) of malaria was not discovered until 1880 and the pneumococcus (pneu monia germ) not until 1880. It was after physicians had learned : about these specific causes of disease and particular ly pneumonia that the resource ful practitioners conjured up the "lowered resistance" theory, which has kept everybody so confused that a smart doctor can hedge on the diagnosis in any circumstance. Not that I enjoy discomfort from cold or dampness. I mere ly contend that such discomfort has nothing to do with suscepti bility to or immunity to any known disease or ailment. I contend that no one has educed scientific evidence that cold drafts, wet feet, insufficient clothing, change of weather, sudden chilling after being over heated or any other everyday discomfort "lowers resistance" to respiratory infections, rheu matic fever (streptococcic-septicemia, inflammatory rheuma tism), or infantile paralysis. . ' For that matter, no one has proved and, I can safely say, no medical authority will attempt to prove that ; "lowered resis tance" or; "maintaining resis tance" is anything more than sheer hokum. Mind you, now, sophomores, we're talking about hypothetical or imaginary "re sistance." Please do not babble about immunity, which is spe cific and sometime measurable (Schick test for immunity to diphtheria) and conferable (im munity to typhoid fever, diph theria, smallpox, tetanus and in the near future, let us hope, to infantile paralysis with Salk's vaccine). The childish fancy of "resistance" applies to nothing in particular and everything if you are not particular. As long as the medical profes sion clings to nineteenth cent ury theories about the cri (com mon respiratory infections),- ma laria and the rheumatiz, probab ly basement apartments will .be unpopular. As a matter of fact basement rooms are usually more comfortable is cold and damp weather than upper floor rooms and if occupants get a reasonable amount of sunshine or daylight elsewhere, basement apartments are as desirable as upper floor apartments for chil dren and adults. If any physician desires to re fute what I say here about "re sistance" or about the effects of exposure to everyday cold and dampness I'll print his or her statement without altera tion, provided It Is not too long to fit in here and provided he or she consents to my revealing his or her identity if my honesty is challenged. . Otherwise of course I'll respect the physician's preference about that. Now I'm off to the bowling green, so we'll deal with hard floors later.
