Solons Protest
Freighter Transfers
Washington (U.R) Three
Oregon congressmen protested
today against possible transfer
of 75 reserve fleet freighters
from Astoria, Ore., to Olympia,
Wash.
Sens. Wayne Morse and Rich
ard L. Neuberger and Rep. Edith
Green, all Democrats, wrote
Earl M. Hughes, vice-president
of the Commodity Credit Corp.
that the transfer would increase
the number of jobless at Astoria
where the unemployment situa
tion already is "critical . . .
alarming."
Government costs would go
up thousands of dollars a ship,
they also said.
The ships are being used for
storage of grain held by the
government in the price support
program.
