SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL. TRIBUNE Thursday, February 24, 1955 Eleven High School Music Students Picked for Meeting Eleven Medford High school music students have been select ed to attend a conference nf Northwest music educators in Eugene April 13 to 16, it was announced today by I. A. Mirick, director of instrumental music for the Medford schools. Almost 800 students from about 220 schools in five states will form a 200-piece band, and 400-member chorus, and a 180 piece orchestra. They were chosen from hundreds of appli cants, and will spend the four days rehearsing under nationally-known guest conductors. Those picked from here for the chorus are Elaine Cox, Mira Frohnmayer, Macy Overstreet and Rodney Hammer. Emily Gannaway, playing snare drum, and Tom Robertson, bass, were picked to play with the band, and Nancy Walstead, Viola Rus sell, Shirley Stafford, Sonja Peterson and Deanna Campbell are the orchestra students. Concert Planned A concert will be presented as the concluding event of the con ference. The conference is held every two years, and is an important : event for music educators from Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Clinics, concerts, addresses and the pre sentation of new teaching ma terials feature the meetings. Guest conductors for the stu dent music organizations will be Harold Bachman, University of Florida, band; Irwin Hoffman, conductor of the Vancouver, B.C., symphony orchestra, and r. nanes tun, director of choral music at the University of Southern California, chorus. Mystery Author Threatens Suicide La Jolla OI.R) Raymond Chandler, 66, well known mys ery story writer, was under ob servation in County Hospital to day after apparently threaten ing to commit suicide. The author telephoned the po lice substation here Tuesday night and announced he was going to kill himself. Officers rushed to his home and as they entered they heard two shots. They said they found Chandler in his shower stall, clutching a pistol but unharmed. Officers said Chandler had been despondent since the death of his wife in December. He was committed to the hospital "for his own protection," police re ported. Author Files Suit in 'Caine Mutiny' Case Hollywood (U.R) Actor Paul Douglas accused a stage producer today in a $1,000,000 defamation suit with "unjustly" blaming Douglas for cancella tion of "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial" road tour. The suit, filed here yesterday, .named Producer Paul Gregory and Gregory Associates, Inc. The actor charged Gregory was dis satisfied v.'!th financial returns from the production and "seized upon the first available oppor tunity to terminate the tour." Gregory closed the road show - after Douglas was quoted in a Greensboro, N. C, newspaper interview Jan. 21 as saying "The South stinks." 4-H Club News Trail Club The Sewing Circle met at the home of Peg and Jackie Hume Feb. 17. Mary Ann Elrod joined our club, so we changed the name of the Sewing Five to The O z s i ocwiug vircie. We started working on our head scarfs. The girls stayed over night. Jackie Hume Reporter Ruch Club , Ruch 4-H club held a meet ing at the home of Marybeth Ramsay on February 6. We dis cussed the program that we are to put on "in March. A motion was made that we put on a comedy and a dance and sell cake and coffee. The meeting was called to order by' the presi dent, Romele Fossen. . Shirley Dunlap Reporter The Roxy Ann 4-H Swain club, met at the home of William Harrison, leader of . the Club Feb. 21. The meeting was called to order by vice-president Kim Griffin who was elected presi dent for the coming year. Hank Dalton was elected vice-president, Ralph Applegate, secre tary, yell and song leader. Gary Griff en, reporter, Gilbert Har rison. " Plans were discussed for the year.
