There are
Holly woods.
One is the
state-of-m i n d
Hollywood
the entertain-

that mcluo.es a sprawling area
of suburbs of this area where
celebrities work, play and live,
from Bel-Air to Burbank.
Then there's the small area
actually designated by the Post
Office as "Hollywood."
Just Main Street
"The tourists go to that phy
sical town of Hollywood, expect
ing to see something romantic
and clamourous, but it looks like
Main Street in any other town,"
explained Lome Pratt, secretary
of the Hollywood Chamber of
Commerce, who's in charge of the
rejuvenation.
In recent years the town of
Hollywood has become seedy and
unfashionable and tourists saw
fruit and juice stands, surplus
stores and aging buildings.
But property owners and the
radio, TV and movie industries
have banded together to : bring
the town of Hollywood back its
legendary glory.

As We Live
Husband's Father Is
Bad Influence On Him
Much has been written about
men who remain "Mama's boys."
A "Papa's boy" can be just as
bad."
(Q) "Mr husband is a 'Papa's
boyl' He is always running
home to his, father when he
gets in debt to borrow money.
Twice he got into trouble with
the law and his- father came to
his rescue. I don'i think his
father is a good influence. He
likes to drink and play around
with women.
When my husband goes
over to see his father, I am
sure that they go out to drink
t.nd I am sure that he doesn't
sit quietly by while his father
chases women. When I say
anything to him about this he
gets angry and tells me that
it is none of my business. How
can I get my husband away
from nis father's influence,
and make a man out of him?"
(A) The tie between your hus
band and his father is very
strong and will not easily be
broKen. un
doubt edly,
your husband
looks upon his
father as a
'"hero" and is
trying to inv
itate him.
I agree that
the father is a
bad influence,
but I am
Dr. Hur lock
afraid you could never convince
your husband of this. Even if
you manage to get your husband
to take a 30b far enough away
from his father to break the con
tact, you could not erase from
bis mind the pattern of behavior
he has learned from his father

First the sidewalks on Holly

names of 4,800 movie, television
and radio celebrities from the
past 50 years. The newsstands
and trash cans will be of con
temporary design and blue, yel

signs will be posted at each
corner. If the city approves new
street lights will give the boule

In future years, if the budget
holds out, plastic canopies will
be placed over th sidewalks and
trees on the curbings. A huge
metal arch also is scheduled toj
hang over the famous corner of
Hollywood Blvd. and Vine St.
Tourist Bureau
The TV-radio networks, film
studios, hotels, nightclubs and
restaurants are pitching in to
operate a "Hollywood Tourist
Bureau" to handle tours and
broadcast tickets for visitors.
The movie studios also plan to
open a "Movie Museum" where
for the first time tourists can
see props, cameras, movie sets
and mementoes of motion pic
tures. Property owners are giving
Hollywood a "new look," ' too.
Capitol records are nearly fin

been remodeled. Max Factor
plans to build a new cosmetic
factory in the area. Even the
old Hollywood Hotel is due to
be torn down and replaced by a

Your one hope of keeping
your husband away from his
father as much as possible is to
try to have a busy enough social
life with young couples .that
there will be relatively little
free time for him to go to see his

from a man named Lewis Gla

claims, to be the only fulltime
quill pen-maker in America.
Glaser, correctly, suggests that
the quill played an important
role , in our history, and he
would like to see every desk of
every congressman and senator
decked out with one. Roberts
had to write Glaser a thankee
note and tell him that he had
little to do with what kind of

WASHDAY WAS DRUDGERY in Grandmother's day long hours of sweating,
straining, back-breaking work. Today's housewife uses a modern washer and dryer.
Manufacturers have reduced washday chores to a turn of a dial., v
But to mass produce millions of washers and dryers, manufacturers must
be able to sell them by the millions. Only by advertising can a manu
- facturer talk to millions of people at one time.. , .
ADVERTISING TELLS the story of new home appliances ;. . and helps sell them.
The more it sells, the more must be made keeping the production lines and the jobs
going. The result: newer, better home appliances at prices more people can afford
to pay. Advertising helped make the difference in home appliances, and in our
American way of life.

Old chivalry apparently still
abounts in Washington. During
the recent snow storm, a gent,
obviously a biggie since he wore
a Homburg, caught up with a
cold and travel weary woman.
Both tried to board the bus at
the same time. Said the gentle
man: "Be my guest, madam."
"No thanks," replied the lady,
"I have my own bus token."
And there went what was left
of chivalry. .
