Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) has painted a gloomy picture for Republi cans on their chances of recap turing control of the Senate next year. The chairman of the GOP Senatorial Campaign Committee outlined the GOP's chances be fore the Republican National Committee meeting here last week, - informed sources said." Voting Against Republicans Based on a study of political trends since 1952, Goldwater said the voting, both in state legislative and congressional races, has been against the Re publicans. Furthermore, Goldwater "pointed out that most of the 15 Democrats up for reelection in 1956 are from normally "safe7 Southern or border states. But only two Democrats, Sen. Herbert H. Lehman, New York, and Sen. Wayne Morse, Oregon, come from states where the vot ing margin between the two major parties is usually thin. Morse joined the Democratic ranks formally last week mak ing the senatorial division now 47 Republicans and 49 Demo crats. Balance About Even Several of the 17 GOP sena tors up for reelection, Gold- water said, come from states where the balance between . the two parties is about even. These include Sens. Prescott Bush, Connecticut; John M. Butler, Maryland; Everett M. Dirksen, Illinois; James H. Duff, Pennsyl vania; and , Herman Welker, Idaho. Goldwater said Republican chances of picking up any new seats would be best in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri, New York and Washington. If a Republican candidate were to win the presidency next year he might carry some GOP senators with him in close states. MAYBE COLOR BLIND Montgomery, Ala. (U.R) H. G. Campers Blamed For Park Area Fires Washington (U.R) Canipers caused more fires in national park areas last year than in-any previous year except 1952, ac cording, to - an - Interior Depart ment report. Total fires of all types, except those in buildings, was .304, smallest number in 20 years ex cept for 1944 and 1948. Man caused 212 fires and lightning started 92. Total lightning caused fires, was the lowest in 20 years except 1948. Some 9800 acres, about half the average for the preceding 10-year period, were burned last year. This included 4000 acres of forest land, 2800 of brushland and 3000 of grassland. ; Three fires alone ' crackled j through about 85 per cent of the' total acreage ' burned. , ? . . A fire caused by lightning in an inaccessible mountainous reg ion of Saguaro National Monu ment, Arizona, burned 4220 acres of forest and brushland. The devastating week end storm left at least 42 persons dead, mountainous drifts, and scores of marooned travellers in its wake. Great Plains residents had hardly begun the job of digging out today when the Weather Bureau announced that a new cold wave, packing zero temper atures and. snow, would sweep out of Montana. "It's got all the makings of a blizzard," a forecaster said. The Great Falls, Mont., Weath er Bureau said a cold wave, fol lowed by . snow, would spread across the state tonight and to morrow1. Winds up to 30 miles an hour, blowing or drifting snow, and temperatures falling to or below zero were predicted. More SnowExpected : Snow and much colder weath er were expected in the Da kotas, while the Omaha, Neb., Weather Bureau issued a special advisory of icy air and zero tem peratures. - Nebraska, buried under up to 12 inches of snow by the last blizzard, was due for "rather severe blowing . and drifting snow," the advisory said. The week end blizzard took a freak cut northward last night after lashing parts of Nebraska, the Dakotas and Minnesota. Heavily populated areas to the east were spared from the win try blasts, but snow driven by howling winds blanketed most of southern Manitoba and north western Ontario today. ; Bitter ' winter weather mean while struck in two other parts of the globe. The North Sea froze and a smoke-haze turned the sky green over Britain. In the China Sea, a violent storm which killed three persons and sank or crippled 38 vessels began to weaken. i -This nation's blizzard was the worst since 1949, when a vast "Operation Snowbound" . was launched to rescue stranded ranchers, farmers and livestock. ;It packed highways deep with snow and deaths "caused by traf fic; accidents, over-exertion and exposure '.claimed a rising t;oIl of lives. - '"' New Mexico Tragedy , .." . The greatest weather-caused tragedy was in New Mexico, where an airliner carrying 16 persons crashed into a mountain- peak during a snow storm. -. A 15-man rescue party reached the still-smoking wreckage Sun day. AH 16 persons were dead. In Nebraska, which felt the blizzard's full-fury for .three snow-bound days, four rescue workers were still missing today. Snow plows had broken through wind-whipped drifts to rescue scores of marooned motor ists today. But many other travellers were still stranded in small towns where they had taken refuge during the storm, i Ten persons, including five children, spent a night in a snow marooned car near Ogalalla, Neb., and rescue crews reached 10 motorists who sought shelter in an isolated farm home near Cheyenne, Wyo. John Edmondson, 34, Cement, Okla., who struck out from a stalled car to seek help . for three companions, was found in a ditch where he had spent more than seven hours during three above weather. His shoes were gone and his hands and feet were completely frozen.
