(U.R) Robert Baughman is 95, and his wife 92, but don't go calling them an elderly couple. "I don't think anybody is any older than they feel," said Baughman, who added that he doesn't feel in the least bit too old. In fact, said Baughman, he's known in his neighborhood as "The Kid." The Baughman's married in 1931. Each had been widowed and each had eight children dur ing their first marriages. The Baughmans keep on the go, visiting people in their neigh borhood who are ill or in trou ble. Mrs. Baughman had to slow down recently because her arth ritis started troubling her. Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Pren Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) That fa mous fight scene from, the old movie classic, "The Spoilers," was filmed affain in Hollv- tV i wood today dui in mis 1955 version the doubles had their day. Universal-Inter national Studio decided to make the Aline Mosby fifth celluloid version of tne durable old west ern. In the original 1914 6ilent, William Farnum and Tom Sant schi sizzled the screen with a fight that turned into a real one. Santschi lost three teeth and Farnum got a broken nose, a fractured hand and a blood clot in his cheek that almost killed him. : : ,:. : Thus I sped breathlessly to U-I sound sta'ge 14 to be on hand when Jeff Chandler pummelled Rory Calhoun to a bloody pulp, or vice versa. . . I found these two actors sit ting casually on the sidelines, blood on their faces. On closer inspection, the red smears looked like nail polish. And how was the fight? "Ask them," grunted honest Chandler, and pointed : to two stunt men. ' Chandler Fakes Hit One of the stunt doubles had his hair dyed gray to match Chandler's. The other kept his dark hair long to be a carbon copy of Calhoun's. The camera moved in for : a closeup. Chandler faked a punch at Calhoun. Calhoun's head snapped back "so it looks like you get hit," he explained later. They sank to mattresses placed out of camera range. Then the doubles took over for a long scene in which chairs were thrown, tables overturned, punches traded and bodies tossed down staircases. Calhoun and Chandler watched the action with interest. After several moments of sil ence, Chandler observed to Cal houn, "your double makes more noise than mine." Farnum and Sanschi were sent to the hospital for three days after their legendary battle. Farnum mourned before his death three years ago, "they all have to use doubles nowadays. They don't let you pare a finger nail yourself." Minor Bruises Chandler rolled up his trousers to show, rather proudy, bruises about the size of dimes on his knees. Calhoun displayed an iodine-smeared bruise on one hand. Director Jess Hibbs interrupt ed to say his "Spoilers" fight was a tamer version of the original. "It's been imitated in every .T-V . western with all sorts of gimmicks, so the only way we could be different was to go back to the old, simple routine of two guys who stand up and fight," he said. . The doubles by now were scuffling and grunting. One had a broken finger. Chandler yawned, "Well, I guess 1 11 make a phone call," and sauntered off. The "Spoilers" fight also was done by Noah Beery and Milton Mills in 1923, Gary Cooper and William Boyd in 1930 and John Wayne and Randolph Scott in 1942, or, rather, with the help oi tneir aou.DJ.es. Quemoy, Matsu, Nanchi, the Pescadores the names were unknown to many Americans until recently. Now they are in headlines almost daily as the world waits tensely to see whether Red China will try to seize them as stepping stones to invasion of Formosa. Information Provided To acquaint Americans With these suddsly-important piles of rocks, the National Geographic Society dug into its files today and produced the following in formation on the main islands involved: Nanchi: The largest in a clus ter of tiny - islands 150 miles north of Formosa. Since the Na tionalist withdrawal from the Tachens, the Nanchi group stands as the - northernmost picket line against possible Red invasion of Formosa. They are now heavily reinforced and equipped with radar. Nanchi itself is a rocky iip thrust barely a mile long, 800 yards wide at its broadest, and 750 feet high. It lies 20 miles off the mainland and some 40 miles from the Red port of Wen chow. Matsu: 150 miles southeast of Nanchi, stands in the approaches to mainland Foochow, opposite the northern end of Formosa. Like Nanchi, it is ringed by a group of rocky islets subject to Nationalist control. Quemoy and Little Quemoy: Lie within the outer harbor of Amoy, one of the Communists' most important ports. Heavily garrisoned, the Quemoys have been attacked, bombed, and shelled intermittently since 1949. Troops are dug into an elabo rate tunnel system in the clay-and-rocky hillsides. Has Fishing Village Wuchiu: An isolated dot of land between Matsu and Que moy, and some 14 miles out in the strait still reportedly held by Formosan forces. It has one large fishing village. The Pescadores: 64 tiny islands totaling only 50 square miles, - lying across the main body of the strait on the For mosa side. Penghu is the largest and holds the chief port, Ma kung. Collectively the islands are known to the Chinese as the Penghus; "Pescadores," from the Portuguese, means "fishermen." No would-be attacker of For mosa in history has ever suc ceeded without first occupying the bleak Pescadores.
