The troupe of more than 20 boys, aged seven to fourteen years, are members of an organ iation which dates back to July 7, 1498 when Emperor Maxi milian I established the choir by Imperial decree. Subsidized by the Hapsburgs until the first World War, the group achieved fame through out Europe. Haydn and Schubert were members of the Vienna Choir Boys until their voices changed. Since the first World War, the choir has been suDDorted by pri vate funds, supplemented by the income derived from concert tours which began in 1926. The ffrouo is currently featured in the record-breaking "Cinerama." Thousands of boys are brought to the institution each year by hopeful parents but only about 100 are accepted. The young sters are housed and receive training not only in music but in all scholastic subjects.Head- quarters of the choir is a former Imperial palace, converted since the war.
