Teague' of the - House Veterans Committee hoisted a go-slow sign today against demands for any broad new benefits for peacetime vet erans. The Texas Democrat warned that such a urogram could im peril what he terms "basic" ben efits paid to men and, their de pendents who were injured or killed in wartime. Conservative Approach Teague, in an exclusive inter ' view with United Press, charted a , new . and conservative ap proach to veterans legislation. He did not propose any large scale repeal ,of existing benefits. But he said it is time to "re evaluate" . them, for the future, in light of changing times and other programs like social secur ity, now available to Americans generally. ' "More and more, Teague as serted, "we are going to have to treturn to the basic concept of :veterans benefits: care of the .men disabled in service and of Ithe dependents of men who lost rtheir lives. " ; "There can be no denying our iobligation to pay disability com tpensation to these men and their 'families. There is a problem as to how far our government should go in pensions for vet 'erans with no war disability." Departure From Philosophy His views represented a con siderable departure from the philosophy of some key mem bers of the veterans committee in the past. During and since World War II the emphasis-has been on a sweemns urogram of .readjustment" benefits schol arships, unemployment insur ance, - loan guarantees to buy homes, farm and businesses on which the government has spent so far almost $20,000,000. Teague himself played a key part in passage of the so-called Korean GI Bill, extending bene fits of this kind to men in serv ice between June 27, 1950, and Feb. 1, this year. .. There also has been a con tinuing drive to broaden the general pension laws. Malaria is one of the oldest known diseases of .mankind. Bv MERRIMAN SMITH United Press White House Writer Washington (U.R) Back stairs at the White House: If the book stores have "any copies left, President Eisenhow er's "Crusade In Europe" should zoom back onto the best-seller lists. It was required re-reading for most Washington corres pondents last week, particularly the concluding chapters in which the then Gen. Eisenhower de scribed his World War II rela tions with the Russians. Mr. Eisenhower devoted a good part of one chapter to his personal knowledge of Marshal Zhukov, the new Soviet defense minister. Mr. Eisenhower admires Zhu kov not for his Communist be liefs, but his professional mili tary ability. K The President, just after the end of World War II, told asso ciates in Germany that he was amazed by the manner in which Zhukov had been able to move tremendous masses of Russian troops with, nothing like the transport available to American and British forces. Three miniature Black Angus cattle models, of course on the shelf- of an alcove in the President's office. , One of the President's recent dinner guests was Frank McCar thy, a producer for the 20th Century Fox in Hollywood. Mr. Eisenhower and McCarthy had a fine evening talking over old times when McCarthy was an aide to Gen. George C. Marshall, and later an .assistant secretary of state. Utah Governor Denies Seeking Presidency Salt Lake City (U.R) Gov. J. Bracken Lee, has denied he was interested in the running for the presidency on a third party ticket. Lee said emphatically he would not accept such a nomin ation if it were offered. ' ... The Republican governor, now serving his second term, has not disclosed his personal plans when his term ends in 1956. He said simply he expeets to continue -his efforts to pre serve constitutional government. . Lee said "I didn't fight, the New Deal 20 years for nothing," and added he felt he should still fight ! against New Deal pro grams even if they were spon sored by my own party." The governor made the com ment in reply to a statement from Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (R-Utah) that Lee was seeking the presidency as head of ' a third "splinter" party in 1956.: Demand for diesel fuel has in creased at a rate about three times that of commercial grades of gasoline. A friend of the President shook his head sadly. : '..;. "No, quite the contrary when they read this in the Kremlin, Zhukov probably will be sent to Siberia."
