Explosion Victim Succumbs Minneapolis (U.R) One of 14 persons burned in an explosion and fire at a Cargill, Inc., lin seed oil extraction plant here yesterday, died early today and four others remained in critical condition. John O.'Sleppy, 26, died at Fairview Hospital this morning cf critical burns' received in the explosion and resulting ' fire which destroyed the S50Q.000 extraction mill in Northeast Minneapolis. Sullivan today sentenced Claude Lightfoot, exe cutive secretary of the Commun ist Party in Illinois, to five years imprisonment and fined him 55000. Lightfoot was found guilty by a jury Jan. 26 oh charges he violated the Smith act, by be longing to the Communist party in full knowledge that it ad vocated the violent overthrow of the government. Car michael, Talent, was elected as a trustee at the conference. - Injured Andrew Kuznik, 54, Oakland, Calif., a member of a California Oregon Power com pany traveling crew, was in jured when he fell from a power pole yesterday afternoon. He was taken to Sacred Heart hos pital by Medford Ambulance service for treatment of rib and hip injuries. . - 4-H Workshop . The annual Jackson county demonstration and workshop for 4-H club lead ers will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Bigham hall at the fair grounds. Those attending the event, which is for leaders only, are asked to bring their own lunch and a cup. Tea and coffee will be furnished. ' Vagrancy James Michael Hughes, 33, transient, pleaded guilty in municipal' court today to a charge of vagrancy and was sentenced to 10 days, subject to later suspension, according to city police. Police said that he was occupying a room at the Crater hotel, 30 South Central avt., without having registered. Pleads Innocent Clifford Burton Daily, 50, of 1637 Biddle rd., was represented by attorney in municipal court today and a plea of innocent was made to a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor, according to police records. A bail of $100 was posted earlier. A trial date will be set. ; - ' Vagrant Sentenced Rex Treadwell, 55, St. Louis, Mo., pleaded, guilty to vagrancy yes terday and was sentenced to 30 days in the city jail at a muni cipal court hearing, according to city police records. The sentence was subject to later suspension. Police said that Treadwell was attempting to auction off cloth ing' which didn't belong to him, at the Fourth Wheel club, 31 South Front st. - - Surgery Patients - Five surgery-patients were reported by Community hospital this mor ning. Shell Found Thomas Hook er, 44 North Orange st., reported to city police Saturday that his son had found a three-inch pro jectile with a warhead in an ab andoned building behind the YMCA. The shell was turned over to police and the National Guard for disposal. . . Receives Diploma - Kenneth B. Thomas, 580 Lozier lane, an electrician with the California Oregon Power company, recent ly received a diploma in electric light and power following a course from the International Correspondence schools, accord ing to Russ Mitchell, local ICS representative. Thomas is a grad uate of the Sams ""Valley High school. New Pharmacist Mrs. Don Berry recently began work as a pharmacist at the Central Rex all Drug store. Berry is a horti culturist with the Jackson Coun ty agriculture agent's offices. The Berrys have moved to their new home at 815 Taylor st., the former Dr. A. E. Dodson home, which they recently: purchased. Jewelry Theft Jewelry val ued at about $300 was reported stolen from the residence of Ira Devon Zimmerman, 346 South Holly st.; according to city , po lice. The theft occurred some time between 3 p.m. Saturday and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police said. A $25 radio and some small costume jewelry has been re covered. It was involved in the same theft, they added. ' At Osteopathic Caroline Wil liams, 6, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Williams, Salem, underwent a tonsillectomy at Os teopathic hospital today, the hos pital reported. Bill Davis, Gold Hill, is a medical patient at the hospital and Mrs. Charles White, who underwent minor surgery at the hospital, was released to day to return to her home at 637 Main st., Ashland. . He was a native Ore gonian, born in Roseburg on July 26, 1873. Funeral services are in charge of Ward's Funeral home in Klamath Falls. . Local arrange ments were in charge of Chapel Mortuary. , GEORGE HAUBER A Requiem Mass for George Hauber, 71, who died Sunday, will be offered by the Rev. Wil liam McLeod at Sacred Heart Catholic church Wednesday at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Siski you Memorial park, with Conger-Morris funeral home in charge of arrangements. - The deceased was born March 22, 1883, in Bavaria, Germany, and had made his home in -southern Oregon for the past 29 years. ORAFINO GORDEN Funeral services for Mrs. Ora fino Edmondson Gorden, 74, of Fort Klamath, who died at Klamath Falls Monday, will be held at Perl funeral home Thurs day at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Father Galen Onstead of the Episcopal church of Klamath Falls officiating. Interment will be in Butte Falls cemetery. Those desiring to pay their last respects may call 1 at the funeral home tonight or Wednes day. ; , The deceased was born near Butte Falls on Feb. 17, 1880, and had spent her entire life in southern Oregon. She was mar ried to : Robert E. Gorden, who survives, at Medford on June 16, 1932. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Edmondson, were early pioneers of southern Oregon. ; Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. ' Faye- Phelan, and Mrs. Lucille Jones, both of Klamath Falls, and Mrs. Norma Jockisch, Peoria 111.; a son, Rob ert R.', Tillamook, Ore.; two sis ters, Mrs. Lottie Allen, Medford, and Mrs. Margaret Patton, Butte Falls, and four grandchildren. ORVILLE MAYFIELD Services for Orville William Mayfield, 67, who died Sunday, will.be held in Conger-Morris chapel Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Norman K. Tully of the Jacksonville 'Presbyterian church officiating. Interment will be in Jacksonville cemetery, with committal services under the direction of Warren Lodge No. 10, A.F.&A.M.; Jacksonville. Pall bearers will be Glenn Smith, Ernest Mclntyre, George Redhead, George Mero, Gale Buffington and Robb Hughes. The deceased was born Aug! 7, 1887, in Sibley, Mo. He came to the Applegate valley in 1948 and to Jacksonville a year ago. He was a charter member of the Upper Applegate Grange, of the Christian church at Cedonia, Wash., and of Hunters Lodge No. 236 F.&A.M., Hunters, Wash. On Aug. 18, 1921, in ' Spokane, Wash., he was married to Nellie E. Jagger, who survives.- Other survivors include a son, Charles A., Los Angeles, Calif;; a sister, Mrs. William McLough ry, Black Diamond, Wash.; two grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.
