(U.R) Favored Barbara Romack of Sacramento, Calif., headed a field of approximately 100 wo men golfers who teed off today in the qualifying round of the 37th annual Palm Beach tourna- ment. Miss Romack, who is the wo men's national champion, is still seeking her first victory on the Florida winter tour. Among those who are expect ed to furnish her greatest op position are defending champ ion Joyce Ziske of Waterford, Wis., who combined with Wiffi Smith of Los Angeles to win the Hollywood Four-Ball tourna ment; Vonnie Colby of Holly wood, Fla.; Pat Lesser of Seat tle, who defeated Miss Romack in the final round of the Miami Doherty tournament, and veter- an Polly Riley of Fort Worth, lex. The field will be reduced to a championship flight of 32 with two-some match eliminations scheduled to begin' Wednesday. Gun Cliib Plans Shooting School Medford Gun club will con duct a shooting school next Sat urday at the club grounds just west of the Crater Lake high way Four Corners. Traps will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. for skeet or 16-yard shoot- ink- Competent instructors will be on hand to teach beginners The afternoon activity will give older shooters a chance to prac tice. Mulflur Named Bevo Assistant Portland (U.R) Bill Mul flur, 82, has been appointed as sistant to the general manager of the Portland Baseball club, according to general manager Joe Ziegler. Ziegler said Mulflur, who now holds -a similar job with the Buffalo club in the International league, will take over his new job soon. - Mulflur succeeds Bill Garbar ino who resigned several days ago. At the same time, Walter J. Lodmell, a Beaver staff member since 1950, was appointed bus iness manager of the club. Harrington Nets 309 at Phoenix George Harrington, Rogue Valley Country club, carded a 309 total in the amateur divi sion of the Phoenix, Ariz., Open Golf tourney, according to re ports received locally. He trailed considerably be hind Eddie Draper, Seattle, who was low amateur with a 292 total. There were 61 cases listed. Leading the list were 31 cases of chicken pox, with the largest number, 14, reported from Phoe nix. Eight others were reported from Talent; four from Central Point, three from Medford, and one each from Ashland and Jacksonville. Nine cases of pneumonia were listed, five in Medford, two in Ashland, and one each in Jack sonville and Phoenix. Other dis ease cases listed included three of : influenza, five of scarlet fever, six of measles, two of strep throat, and single cases of scalp ringworm, infectious hepatitis, amoebic dysentery, infectious mononucleosis and whooping cough. Freak Gunshot Fatal To Corvallis Child Corvallis (U.R) A two-year-old girl died at Good Sam aritan hospital here today of gunshot wounds received in a freak accident near Alsea last night. The victim was Brendy Bliss, daughter of Mrs. Daniel ZanT dofsky. The girl's stepfather, Daniel Zandofsky, was cleaning his rifle in the living room of the family home seven miles west of Alsea in Benton county when it accidentally went off. The bullet passed through the ceiling into an upstairs bed room, struck a bed where Bren dy was sleeping between her two sisters and pierced the lit tle girl's neck. To Seattle Edmund Hass, manager of the Medford bureau of the Pacific Northwest com pany, left today for Seattle to confer with executives of the securities firm. Friday he will spend in the Portland office, and plans to return here Satur day. Sentenced Donald William Coggins, 19, of 1700 Prune st., Medford, yesterday was sen tenced to three years in state prison on a charge of probation violation, according to District Attorney Walter Nunley. The youth was given a two-year sus pended sentence on Dec. 10, 1954, and was placed on proba tion at that time. Fined Buren Clayton Ken nedy, 27, of 530 DeBarr ave., was fined $250 and court costs in district court yesterday on a charge of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor. He also received a sus pended 30-day jail sentence, and his operator's license was sus pended for 90 . days. Kennedy pleaded guilty to the charge. Pleads Guilty Albert Royal Smith, 23, of 723 N.E. Dean dr., Grants Pass, pleaded guilty yes terday in district court to a charge of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor. He was fined S250 and court costs and was given a 30 day suspended jail . sentence.' Smith's operator's license was suspended for 90 days. To Eugene The J, T. Raabe family plans to leave here Thurs day for Eugene where they will live. Raabe has preceded Mrs. Raabe and the two sons, Joe Jr., a high school student, and Jerry, who attends St. Marys school. Raabe was with the district re tail office of . the Union Oil com pany here which has been moved to Eugene. To Minneapolis Mrs. Claude Demo, of the Sacred Heart hos pital admission office, plans to leave. Wednesday, for Minnea polis, Minn., on a business trip. ' ' Pumpers Called Fire depart ment pumper trucks were called at 3:55 p.m. yesterday to the 400 block of Wesi'Main st. to flush down gasoline spilled by a gaso line delivery truck, and at 5:35 p.m. to the 600 block of North Bartlett st., to extinguish an un attended trash fire. No damage was reported. The fire marshal yesterday inspected six business occupancies, a hotel and made one inspection after a fire, and issued eight orders for correction of hazardous conditions. Of fice hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Obituaries BELLE BELL Funeral services for Mrs. Belle Bell, 83, who died at her home, 516 Midway rd., Sunday, will be held at Perl funeral home Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. D. E. Millard" off iciat ing. Interment will be in Jack sonville cemetery. It is the request' of the family that in lieu of flowers a contri bution be sent to the March of Dimes, in care of M r s. Moore Hamilton, 43 Rose ave., Med ford. The deceased, a southern Ore gon resident for over 50 years, was born in Washington county, Arkansas, on Feb. 19, 1871, and came to Oregon in 1893. In May, 1917, she was married to Thom as N. Bell, who survives. They lived on the Mankins ranch south of Jacksonville for 30 years. Other survivors include " a brother, Henry Mankins, Med ford, and several nieces and nephews. Phillipines Senate Ratifies SEATO Pact Manila (U.R) The Senate ratified the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization today. The vote was 18 to 0 with two abstentions. The ratification took place in the same chamber where dip lomats of the United States and seven other nations met last September to write the pact which sets up economic and mil itary bulwarks against Commun ist aggression and subversion in Southeast Asia. Richards, a Navy radarman first class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney A. Richards, Route 1, Central Point, is on board the radar picket destroyer USS Henry W. Tucker, which was scheduled to arrive at Long Beach, Calif., Feb. 6, according to a Navy release. The ship is completing a tour of duty in the Far East. The Tucker visited the Tachen islands last August. WINTER TRAINING Cpl. Robert M. Carr, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Carr, Fern Valley rd., is participating in winter training exercises in Germany, according to an Army release.
