Fanfare '-"A" good share of the Medford fiigh school Black Tornado's suc cess in track" and field and the success borders on the fabulous in Oregon prep circles stems from Coach Bob Newland's per sistent quest for better ways to train Medford athletes and for better methods to help them achieve more speed, height or distance. - -'- Part of this search is accomp lished through letters of inquiry to famous coaches and athletes. The latest star whom Newland has queried and from whom he has received a reply is John Landy, of Melbourne, Australia, who last year ran the world's fastest mile and who was the second man in history to run the mile in under four minutes. :. Newland asked Landy forjn formation on how he has train ed. The Australian received the letter while on a hiking trip and wrote Newland that he would send the info " when he re turned. - Landy told Newland that he has had no experience training young boys but would gladly pass along what he has learned through his actual running ex perience. The great miler sent along his wishes to the Black Tornado for another successful season. Landy considers the 440 yard run a sprint and the half mile and mile middle distances, Newland reported.' ' USED HOLMER METHODS Medford high milers last : year used training procedures prescribed by Gosia Holmex, -Swedish Olympic coach," who originated the training meth-; ods presently used ' by - Euro pean and world distance men. NOT A SIN. ' Last spring we heard some rumbling which made it seem like a sin for a coach to seek but the masters and profit from their knowledge. We don't agree with that line of reasoning. Increas ed knowledge and know-how are essences of success. They foster 'improvement. More- power rib Bob and if possible stronger Black Tornados. Bob reports that the champions are 'glad to pass along what they've learned. Percy Basset Gets Nod Over Davey Gallardo Los Angeles - (U.R) Percy Bassett, second ranked feather weight contender, said today he "wasn't sharp at all" in scoring a 10-round' split decision over Davey Gallardo and that he wants to fight him again "in a few weeks." ' The 129-pound Philadelphian said he just didn't feel like him self in pushing as well as punch ing his way for the nod over3 his 130 pound Los Angeles foe at Olympic . Auditorium last night. v; Bassett carried the fight most of the way and staved off a late rally by Gallardo. The victory evened, an old score for Bassett, who was upset by ' the local fighter in Washington two years ago. . . - Central Point Grade Basketballers Triumph Central Point Central Point graders won two games from Eagle Point yesterday. The seventh grade was Victor 34 to 7 after leading 15 to 3 at half time. Eighth graders won, 41 to 14, after a 21 to 7 midway stand ing. Jerry , Michael and Amos Bishop each, had six points for the CP seventh. Wayne Allen with 16, playing half the game, and Jerome McQuade with 10 led : the eighth 1 grade - victory. Charters had 6 f6r Eagle Point. Ski Conditions Snow was starling to fall at ' Crater Lake National Dark at 8:30 a.m. today. Skiing at that time -was reported ' good to excellent ' and Highway ' 62 was reported open with chains or snow tires advised from Annie Spring to the rim. How ever, with the snowfall there was indication that conditions could change. MU.R) Jockey Ralph Neves, who 19 years ago was declared dead after a spill from a horse, booted home his' 2,500th winner at Santa Anita Thursday to become; the fifth rider in the nation to score that many triumphs. .
