(International) Picldn7 Pears After much pulling and haul ing in the effort to work out a hospital-domiciliary plan for vet erans in this part of the country, the .Veterans . Administration now appears to have perfected a formula of procedure which is efficient and . practicable. The chief difficulty at present is the lack of funds to carry out the program. In a memoran dum just before his departure for Japan for a two months vacation, Manager E. K. Ricker urged conservation in the use of steam heat in order to have more mpney ' for the various features of the new set up. ",We can't heat all the out doors' he said. Manager and Mrs. Ricker. will be with their son, Capt. John K. Ricker, and family, stationed with the Army in Yokohama. . " The system now being worked out is one. of coordination in the movement of eligible veterans to and from the various: hospi tals of the 11 western states in this area. Further details of. the cooperative effort will be work ed out at the conference of managers of units in these states to be held at the Biltmore hotel in Los Angeles Feb. 7, 8, and 9. Assistant Manager Reuben H. Denning ' will represent Camp White at this meeting. He is acting manager in Ricker's ab sence, and has gained a thorough knowledge of administrative practices in the year he has been at this station. The medical program has been completely overhauled by Dr. Charles K. Todd, chief medical officer. In addition to more per sonalized attention to complaints and problems, a complete review of background history and study of the nature of the disabilities of the men have been under taken. ; Dr. Samuel D. Earhart has ret urned from Los Angeles where" he familiarized himself with the elaborate physical med icine, and rehabilitation program which has been -developed at the mammoth i VA installation As We Live Older Parent! He awaits the go-ahead signal to start the full scale operation of his plan here. ; The new formula for the dom iciliary membership recognizes the need for hospital treatment of many cases which failed to receive such attention during the period of uncertainty of the plan for adding a hospital unit to the Home. Likewise arrangements have been made to forward to Camp White such convalescents as- are in condition and capable of liv ing under domiciliary rules and requirements. Various hospitals in the area have been sending such cases here in recent months. Under the new admission plan, these men are "quarantined' in the reception ward of the In firmary where they ' undergo a complete physical and personal checkup, before they are turned over to the companies. , It is conceded that the suc cess of the new Camp White plan will depend to a consider able extent upon the cooperation of the various volunteer agencies providing recreajion and assist ance in making life acceptable for the membership, The reception accorded this considerable nucleus to the com munity life of Medford and vi cinity has caused no small amount of concern among the authorities. They recognize this factor as paramount in weighing the advantages of the location of a retreat for war veterans in the ideal climate and environ ment of the Rogue River valley. The large turnover of men at Camp White is an outstanding feature of the domiciliary expe rience to date. In the six years it is shown : there have been 5,925 admissions, with an annual average of 987.5. This represents more than a complete turnover of men each year. The largest number of admissions was in the calendar year 1951. Last year the number was 884, repre senting a drop which , has been gradual during : the past four years. ' . '- By ELIZABETH HURL0CK, PH.D. : (A) The first thing for' you to do is to go to a doctor and have a thorough physical checkup. Urge your hus band to do likewise. H e can advise you ab out .your health., , any tonic that you should take, and how much rest you should get. If you are not up to par physically," it Dr. Hurlock will certainly affect your , be havior and make your son feel that you lack patience and un derstanding. :- When your older children were the age of your younger son, you and your husband, were younger too and were able to see things more from their angle than you may b'e able to see them from your son's angle now. This helped you to be more un derstanding of their problems, and as a result they made better adjustment. - '. It would help you and your son to get some professional ad vice on this problem. I am sure the principal of your son's school can point out to you what lies back of your son's poor school work, his unhappiness, and his running away from home. If he feels he cannot give you the ad vice you need, ask him to recom mend a guidance counselor.
