Child Embarrassed
By Different Name
:'! It ' is always embarrassing to
a child to have a name that is
different from his mother's.. A
man writesr . '
- (Q) "Four years ago; I mar
ried a divorced woman with a
daughter six years old. I was
divorced too and have two.
children. I support them and
my first wife. My present v
wife's first husband contri
utes nothing, for the support
of his child. For the past year
my wife has been urging me :
to adopt her daughter legally,
because she; says it is embar
rassing to the child to have a
different name. I contend that
if I -do, her former husband
will never do anything for the
child. Then too, I feel that
any money or property I may
have when I die should go to
my own children . and that it
would be unfair - to them to
have my second wife's daugh
ter by another marriage in
herit anything from me. Am I
being selfish about ink mat
ler?" (A) I can readily appreciate
how important it is to the child
to have the same surname as her
mother. Each
year, as she
grows; older
it will be more
and more em
barrassing . to
her . to have a
d i f ferent
name. - '
However, I
can also' see
your point of
view. Natural
ly you feel
Dr. Hurlock
that vour - first responsibility
should be to your. own children.
So long as this child s own fa
ther is alive, he should be sup
porting her, even if her mother
has remarried. -;
Before making any decision
about the matter of adoption, I
suggest that you consult a law
yer. Find out if some financial
support cannot be obtained from
the child's father.
Then ask your lawyer . what
can be done to assure your chil
dren of . getting anything you
may leave when you die, should
you adopt your wife's daughter.
Each state has its laws about in

large estate, your own children
may come out at the little end
of the horn unless you take steps
to safeguard their interests.

Valuable Uses Found
For Turkey Feathers
Gibbon, Neb. U.R) Charles
Wilcox, whose.tufkey farm near
here processes 4,500 birds a day
at the height of the season, says
the feathers are not wasted.
y;. Some of, the feathers are val
uable; He said the best, .: or
"pointer" feathers, from the
wingtips, go into arrows. These
are too valuable for machines
to pluck, .so they are hand
picked. Feathers from the thighs, tail
and back are shipped by the
bagful to various firms for such
uses as . stuffing pillows.

aren't wasted. They're sold for

Keeping Up With
Modern Pace Advised
Philadelphia U.R) If the
modern "pace" has ' you upset,
the best thing to do is literally
to keep up with it, according to
Dr. Burgess L. :. Gordon presi
dent": of the- Woman's Medical
college of Pennsylvania, j
"There is nothing wrong "with
dog-trotting S when you hurry
and marching when you; walk,"
said Dr. Gordon. "When your
friends, sdy we should 'take it
easy," they are giving us the
worst possible advice. If we fol
low ; their well-wishing admoni
tion, it might do us more harm
than good."
From his - studies of athletes,
Dr. Gordon concludes that hur
rying at all times, such as dog
trotting fdr the train and always
"marching briskly" is less harm
ful to health than, taking it easy
most; of the time and then try
ing io rush in an emergency.
"Such emergencies are bound
to come," 'he said. "We might as
well be ready for them by keep
ing in training all the time. '
"A habit of taking things easy
physically most -of the time, and
then placing a sudden strain on
the body in an "emergency is the
sort of thing that costs us our
lives."

It didn't , matter what had become of that original piece of
crude paper upon which A. Lincoln had written the message
that began: ''Fourscore and seven years ago Sensing,
the im permanence of spoken words, Lincoln himself de
clared: ' 1 .
"The world will little note nor Ibrtg remember what we say
here . . ." But his words were caught and preserved for all
time by the newspaper presses of the nation. ?
. Nor did it matter that the singing words of Homer, his
Iliad and Odyssey, were spoken from memory, ; for
. there were scribes who wrote them down and kept
them fresh and living for all mankind.
Yes, the written message; and chiefly the printed message,
is the one that lives.' But more than that, the written mes
sage is tangible as well as permanent. You can return again
and again to it, clip it out, pass it on to others.
