the Tornado's progress through
the first half of the conference
race, if repeated in the second
half and in. the district playoffs,
will get the Medford cagers s- to
the big tourney in a. breeze.
The Southern Oregon confer
ence championship isn't clinched
but the : Black Tornado is well
out in front of the pack with its
record of six wins and no set
backs. It will take mammoth ef
fort on the part of conference
members to calm the blistering
breeze. - - . ;

game lead in the circuit as the
Pelicans dropped their third de
cision. Grants Pass Saturday re
tained a ray of hope in the loop
with its second win; 42 to 32,
over Ashland, all but eliminat
ing Ashland from contention.

Lanky Jerry made the first of
two free attempts.' On his miss
of the second, Kastner intercept
ed the Pelican tip out and. flick
ed in a basket from the- side.
Medford- lead at the quarter

er. The Medford margin through
the second quarter varied from
six to 12 points. It was 31 to 19
with 50 seconds left in the pe
riod. D'Olivio made the first of
two free shots. Munsell tipped
in' the rebound oh the missed
second attempt and the halftime
situation was 31 to 22..
D'Olivio swished a corner
heave as the third cbukker be
gan "but Frank Rector retaliated
in kind for Medford. Copple
drove in after a steal and popped
in another drive in shot and the
Tornado was on its way. The

sities outdid the varsities on the
hoop floor here Saturday night.
Medf ord's jayvees overcame
Klamath 48 to 44 after lagging
for the -biggest portion of the
game. ; It was the junior Tor-
naao s ixn victory . ot tne -sea
son.: .The team is unbeaten. .
: Klamath's jayvees, spurred by
big Earl Tichenor, held the up
per hand 15 to 10 at the quarter
and 23 to 15 at the half. Two
free shots by Larry Gober with
dVz minutes gone by in the third
quarter, gave Medford it's first
lead of the game, 26 to 25. The
Tornado expanded to .30 to 25
and . 32 to. 27 but was' on top
only 32 to 31 at the end ol the

shot gave the edge back to Med
ford 34 to 33 but Tichenor got

vantage. Perkins swished a shot

free chances and Perkins scored
from afield while Tichenor 'got

40 for Medford. McGill shot
twice from the bonus. line and
Hawley once for 48 to 42 and
Tichenor ended the scoring with

Tichenor, who stands ; well
over .the six-foot level, ' had 25
points for the evening. Medford
lost some matching height in
the fourth quarter ; when Mike
Stearns fouled out but his re
placement, Perkins, made up for
the disadvantage in scoring and
flobr play. Hawley and Inskeep
