Child With Limited Vocabulary Said Lacking Popularity Carbondale, HL (U.FD The old saying that "children should be teen and not heard" is all wrong, according to Dr. John Pruis, director of training for speech teachers at Southern Illi nois University. The silent type, young or old, Is a misfit in today's , world," Pruis said., ' , "Free expression" helps clari fy thinking, and a child with a large' vocabularly usually leads his group of playmates, he said. On the other hand, a child who has a limited word knowledge seldom is ; popular with other youngsters. Professor's Theory The professor also has theory on why children ask so many questions: "They ask incessant questions not so much for information as to hear parents talk so they can copy them. "This method, annoying as it may be, should be encouraged not curbed. It helps the child master the ' basic tool of com municationthe spoken word. If he can't use this tool by the time he enters school, he is in for a Tough time learning to read,. -write ; and listen. - The speech specialist said the child who ..; can speak- many words when he starts to learn to read will have little trouble tying the printed symbol to the word in his mind. . Should Have Opportunity - After the child learns to read, he should be given plenty of op portunity -4o read aloud at all age .levels, Pruis said. He noted that adolescents who have poor diction and - unpleasant voices probably also are poor spellers and writers , ; because they've had too little supervised practice in reading and speaking to peo ple. - - "Having you listened to them - talk?" - he asked. "They say Jeetyet, yugonna gessome chow : now?' and you are supposed to -know they are asking 'Did you eat yet? Are you going to get some chow, now?' " Pruis answer for the above is a regular, systematic program to help children at all grade levels to use language effectively with snecial heln for the five to 10 ner cent who have clinical speech troubles. STEPFATHER INSANELY JEALOUS OF STEPSON Most stepparent-stepchild re- lationships work out very well. In some cases, however, the sit uation is miserable for everyone concerned. A mother writes: Q. "My husband was killed whan my son was 'four years old. Two years later. I mar ried , again and everything, went fine at first. I was very happy and I liked my son to have a father. But my hus band is insanely jealous of the boy. He treats him as fairy tale stepparents . treat chil dren. I try to makeup to the boy for the love hit father . dofvviXS-ttfn.r my huirbafid accuses m of . loving the boy more v than I love - him. He never. , takes the boy anywhere, does noth ing for -or with him. This hurts my son's feelings as he sees all his friends' fathers doing things with their sons. The boy knows his father does not like him and this is mak ing a lot of friction- in the home. Have you any sugges-, 'xions about how I can make; things better for all of us?" (A) I am afraid that nothing you could say or do would make - your husband real ize that your main interest in getting him to teeat your son better is to have a hap py home. 'He or. nuriocx would con.- tinue to think that you are put ting your son's interests ahead of his. r-.v - -- '- 'f- However," an outsider might be able to present things to him in a way that .would force him to see for himself how unfair he is to you, the boy, and himself by allowing his jealousy to inter fere with the happiness of your marriage. If you are on friendly terms with his mother, why not dis cuss, this problem with her? The next suggestion would be to ask the principal of ybur son's school, his teacher, or your min ister to talk to your husband. They could stress the effect home friction has on the child's work;- his personality, and his relationships with other people. " (Copyright 1955. General Fea tures Corp.) ;r; j-fe U S.
