I Wednesday January 12,1935 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVET Uranium Discovery Possibilities Here m it- Talked by Speaker Chances for finding uranium In Oregon are as good as any where else, according to Max Schafer, geologist for the Ore gon State Bureau of Mines. Speaking at a meeting of the Northwest Mining Council, Sha- fer stated that the geological f or " mations in Oregon are of approx imately the same age as those in the Colorado plateau country where uranium was discovered recently. Although Oregon has a type of rock entirely different than that found in the Colorado pla teau, it has been discovered that uranium may occur in ' almost : any type of rock, the speaker said. : - '' Similar Formations Shafer pointed out that uran ium has been discovered in ot tonite rock in Washington, and noted that formations similar to this type of rock are located in the Ashland area. Uranium has been found on rhyolite deposits near Bakers- field, Calif., which are similar to deposits occuring in central Oregon. Old lake beds around Klamath Falls and Lakeview are similar to locations where , the valuable mineral has been found in other California areas. ' Uranium also has been found in Nevada in formations much '. like those in adjacent formations in eastern Oregon, Shafer said. He declared that many areas prospected by the Atomic Ener gy commission and pronounced - to be unlikely areas for uranium have produced good desposits. Old gold and copper mine dumps are - good places to prospect, he said. Mar be Low Grade The reason for a low reading, . or none at all, from a. sample taken from, a location showing ', a good reading on a counter is that the volume of the body of ore may be of so low a grade that the small sample, removed from the area, will show no re action, Shafer said. ; - Uranium is not radioactive, the geologist stated. It is the dis integration products which cause reactions on a counter. For this reason, he said, it is possible to obtain a good reading from an outcropping where ground water may have washed the ur- anium out of the rock. '. Shafer also pointed out that it has been established that a . Geiger counter is not reliable when temperatures are low. More than 50 per cent of the recent uranium discoveries have " been" made from instruments ; carried by plane, he said. itofriii i iii in MUMrtif iffBnrfi lawmi n trroiiiiit.iriiiwn mum 111 ' IT'S UEiVBERRY'S GREATEST SAIE-COPE SAVE FOR All THE EAfMLYAUD YOUR HOME -HURRY III Boxr Ann Grange - Ttoxv Ann Granee met Jan. 7 with Master Orie Moore presid- ..." w .
