SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE A-Veapons Said Ready To Protect Allies in Pacific Tokyo r Up- The United States is ready to use atomic weapons to . protect its ' Pacific allies against Communist ag gression, well informed sources said today. These sources said they t un derstood the United States was ; prepared to use atomic weapons to defend ,fepan, Formosa, the Philippines and the Republic of Korea, They declined o 'discuss the types of atomic weapons that would be brought into use against any Red aggressor in the Pacific but it was presumed the United States would use any device that might be needed. Adm. Arthur W. Radford, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, already has said the United Statesrill use atom ic weapons to defend the Repub lic of Korea if the Reds open new aggression, there. For some time there has been considerable speculation that the o United States has atomic weap ons stockpiled in Asia, but there never has been any official con firmation. Guam and Okinawa have been mentioned as likely spots for storing atomic weapons, espe cially bombs. - . The United States has mutual defense treaties with Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Philip pines and one with Formosa awaiting ratification. If any of these nations were attacked, the United States could swing into action immediately. t ' Reports of American readi ness came soon after atomic au thorities in Washington said nu clear weapons now have become standard equipment for all the armed services. Survey Shows More Men Than Women in US Hospitals . Chicago - (U.R) More men are hospitalized than, women, a nationwide-survey shows. This is true .despite. the fact that one-sixth of all persons ad mitted to hospitals in one year were pregnant women. " The survey was made by the Bureau of MeSical Economic Re search of the American Medical association and reported in the AMA Journal. It showed that on one day in 1953 there were 1,206,592 per sons in 6539 of the nation's 6840 registered hospitals. This includ ed 642,156 men and 564,436 wo men or 77,720 more men.. Men Shown Sicklier Fcank G. Dickinson, director of te bureau, said this "strong ly implies that men are the sick lier and more hospitalized sex," but the survey gave no definite reason for the ratio. , The survey showed that even in the childbearing years of life, between 15 and 44, men exceed ed women in hospitals by 13, 000. There were 98,605 more males thai, females in Veterans Admin istration hospitals and also more men than women in other fed eral hospitals. However, in gen- erai nongovernmental nospuais - women exceeded men by 64,631. In state hospitals the number of males and females was prac tically the same, 277,546 and 277,270. U S. Will Press For Verdine Release Washington (U.R) Diplo matic officials said today that the United States will continue to press for the freedom of Pvt. William A. Verdine, 28, of Starks, La., who was reported arrested by the Russians in 1949 and held in jail ever since. The State Department also is giving some consideration to a request that Moscow be con tacted about the detention of Mrs. Erika Glaser Wallach, wife of an American citizen, in a Si berian, prison camp. .Verdine is being held in the same Russian prison camp where two other Americans, freed Saturday by the Soviets, were held. . These sources noted that al though the Pope is out of danger he now gets up an hour later and goes to bed four hours earlier, at 10 pjn. instead of 2 ajn. : The Pope's amazing battle against gastritis t h a t almost killed him last month has left him in a weakened state in the most critical winter of his 16 year reign. Doctors attending the Pope said his heart and lungs are in excellent condition but have ordered him to rest. "For the Pope, there is no rest," the Pope has often told the doctors. . Slaney's permit to operate the federally - owned resort and chairlift was cancelled Friday because of unsatisfactory man agement. He said he will seek a court injunction if a new per mit is not given to him. Slaney said he has a $385,000 business at stake and is losing it because of "unfair criticism. Monday, January 10r 1955 As We Live By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D. Should She Invite Ex-Steady To Prom? The senior prom is the high point in the. year for most high school students, Naturally, a girl wants to spend that time with the boy she likes best. (Q) "I havo ; been going steady with a boy in my class in school ever since the be ginning of the- sophomore year. This year he said be did not want to go steady, because he wanted to have more time for his studies and to do things with the boys. In our school the girls invite-ihe boys to the senior prom. Should I invite this boy, even though we are no longer going steady? I still like him . very much, and I hope he will ask me to go steady again before our senior year is over. My . mother thinks I should not invite him to the prom because he might think I was trying to get him to go steady again. Bui there is no other boy I would enjoy going with as much." (A) Because the memory of your senior prom will be one of the most lasting of your, school days, y o u want it to be as happy as possible For this reason the. boy you ask to the prom should be one you would most enjoy being with. You do not Dr. Hurlock have to be going steady with a boy 'to invite him to a dance, even one as important as a sen ior prom. And because you have gone steady with this lad for the major part of your high school career, he is the logical one for you to ask. The only thing that might hold you back is the knowledge that he has lost interest m you or that he is going steady with another girl. Under such cir cumstances it would be best not to invite him. He might turn down your invitation, and this alone would be enough to spoil the prom for you. If, on the other hand, his only reason for not wanting to go steady is what he said it was, then he will ex pect you to7invite him to the prom.
