Lag in Fund Drive '
The March of Dime faces
a challenge six times greater
o today than it did in 1938 when
"the organization was founded"
"Bob Smith, Jackson county
chairman, said yesterday in urg
county citizens to sten un the
pace in the drive for funds to
aid the fight against infantile
paralysis.
tWe are lagging behind the
same period of a year ago as far
as collections are concerned,"
Smith said. He.pointed out 1954
was the seventh consecutive
year of high polio incidence in
the United States and the third
highest in the nation's history.
Nearly 40,000 new cases were
reported last year, and founda
tion leaders estimate a minimum
24,000 new victims will ; be
stricken in the year ahead.

"This disheartening report is
brightened by progress npted on
the Salk vaccine," Smith point
ed out. He said the National
Foundation for Infantile Paraly
sis feels it is on the threshold
of stamping out polio but more
money is needed if the import
ant work is to continue.
Even if the vaccine is success
ful and is made available with
in the next year, there are 74,
000 patients who were stricken
in other years and who are look
ing toward the Foundation for
care, the chairman said.
In Jackson county alone 29
patients received March of
Dimes assistance last year
amounting to about $6,000

on Thursday Jan. 13, at Central
Point Grange hall. The meeting
will ooen at 8 p.m.

and the j future program of the
district outlined. Movie will be
provided for youngsters and re

county Democratic Central com
mittee, Dr. Woodell said he
could ; see only two possible
causes for a major depression in
the United States. ' , ;
He listed these as a military
defeat on the battlefield, or a
diplomatic defeat in world af

L; Dr. Woodell ' cited safeguards
against depression which be said
were set up under the "New
Deal administration. These, he
said,, include : the 1946 Employ
ment act set up during the Tru
man administration to require
an annual report on the nation's
economic condition, and creation
of a joint congressional commit
tee to study and report on eco
nomic trends; and expansion of
research: bureaus to make fre
quent economic sounding and
report danger signs.
This expansion acts to check
the "ground swells' which lead
to a major depression, Dr. Wood
ell said. He noted that the plan
is operating under, the Eisen
hower administration.- '-

There are several: "proven
remedies" for a major depres
sion, the speaker said. He listed
them as control of market ma
nipulations, bank deposit insur
ance, wage reductions when
costs outstrip profits, shorter
working hours and more leisure
time, control ,' of ' money end
credit,' unemployment insurance,
old age pensions and insurance,
free' educational, facilities, high
minimum wages, . agricultural
price supports, and resource de
velopment. ; "Government planning is here
to stay, no matter which party
k ta power," Dr. Woodell said.
