If Mr. Eisenhower visits Palm Snrines. Calif.. aain this year, it probably will not be before mid-February. Actually, he nas not decided one way or the other about a California visit, al though Paul G. Hoffman, one of his close friends, has high hopes of luring the Eisenhowers back to Palm Springs. . The old Cabinet Room at the White House is being fitted with a large bank of overhead tubu lar lights to make the room more useable for staff confer ences. The room was known during the Roosevelt administration as the . Fish Room because of a decorative tank of tropical fish. The tank was moved long since to other regions of the White House. The Eisenhower administra tion has been using the room for staff meetings, but the light ing was so poor that it was dif ficult for the staff to read from certan types of documents, par ticularly carbon copies. - v - While Mr. Eisenhower was in Augusta recently, technicians h went to work installing an amazingly large bank of lights which virtually cover the ceil ing of the big room. r Actually, the light is strong enough to be used for television and newsreels if Mr. Eisenhow er so desires. . . , Favorite derisive remark around the White House this week was '.'How was your vaca tion?" said usually by the stay- at-homes to those who traveled south with the chief executive. It seems that a lot of work had to be done on the Wash ington end as well as in Augusta. And a much more laborious winter season is in prospect. For one thing, Mr. Eisenhow er will hit the winter banquet circuit in Washington shortly. These affairs require- a lot of work in scheduling and plan ning the President's attendance at an affair outside the White House. He's . already accepting ban quet invitations for dates into March. Timber Group OKs Wage Increase v Portland (U.R) An employer group, the Lumbermen's Indus-1 trial Relations' Committee, nasi joined two big lumber unions ! in recommending acceptance of j a 7vs cent hourly wage increase. H. . J. Greeley of Longview, Wash., board chairman of the LIRC, said in a statement that although the timber industries are not accustomed, to long-term wage contracts, we are recom mending the 1955-56 increase because we feel that such ac ceptance will assure peaceful union-employer : relations for a considerable period of time." Earlier the AFL Lumber and Sawmill Workers. Union and the CIO Woodworkers Union recom mended its locals go along with the increase, recommended by seven-man J governor s fact finding panel.
