it i I- i J I7l OS. o . 9 3 J o J TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) UN Chapter Plans Session On Thursday Anyone in Medford or Jack son county- interested in a Med ford chapter cf the Oregon Un ited Nations association is in vited to attend a meeting on 3U Thursday, January 6. It will be held in one of the YMCA bal cony rooms at 8 p.m. First steps toward organiza tion of a chapter here were tak en in November during a visit here of Dr. Karlin M. Capper Johnson, president of the Ore gon UN association. At that time Harlan P. Bosworth Jr., was elected temporary chairman and Lawrence Solin, temporary treasurer. Purpose of the association is to "disseminate knowledge con cerning the operation of the UN, to encourage, study and to pre pare citizens to take a definite stajd on many ofthe world problems which are under con sideration," it is stated. There are active chapters in Portland and six other Oregon cities, and groups are in the process of organization in Eu gene, Klamath Falls and Med ford. 1 Vinson Vaughans 0 Hosts for Parties In Eagle Point Eagle Point Mr. and Mrs. Vinson Vaughan, Eagle Point, entertained for about 36 persons j from Eagle Point and the area at a New Year's eve supper party. The guests arrived about 8 o'clock when thje supper was served and at S! midnight the Iiosts served hot cider and doughnuts. o Bill McCorkle. now of Green yood, Calif., a former Medford resident, is a houseguest of the Vaughans. A cpmmercial artist, Mr. McCorkle entertained the G group by drawing cartoons on a large board and conveyiiig: ideas of television commercial work. The Vaughans also entertain ed December 26 at a similar 0 party for friends who live in 0 Medford and vicinity. About 34 Q attended and a buffet supper was served. Mrs. Dale Vaughan of Los An o 2geles, then a houseguest of her O (Son and daughter-in-law, was an honored guest. Cottingham, 1329 Queen Anne avenue, to Richard Albert Card. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester P. Card of Aberdeen, Wash. The ceremony took place at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon at First eihadjst rhurch, here, with Dr. Raymond Balcomb of ficiating. Mr. Cottingham gave his daughter in marriage. The bride's wedding gown was designed with full net skirt and the bodice of lace over satin was made with long sleeves. Her fingertip length veil was held by a juliet cap of seed pearls and ashs . Her frock was of pale blue worn with a headdress of pink carnations and she carried a matching bou quet of tKe game flowersj For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Cottingham wore a black faille dress with pink faille Yale Student Leaving Today Gary Boshears will leave for the east today by plane after spending the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miner T. Boshears, 408 South Grape street. The young man is in his fourth year of a five-year elec trical engineering course at Yale university. The Boshear's other son, Sec ond Lt. Kenneth Boshears, is stationed at Ft. Lewis with the Army. Family Here Mr. and Mrs. Hrebert Smith and baby son, Stuart Douglas, spent the Christmas holidays with Mrs. Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Brugman, Hill side drive. After a short visit withrelatives in Portland, they will -return to their home in Pilot Rock, Ore. Guests Leave Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Smith, aunt of the bride, served punch. Mr. and Mrs. Ricfiard Cotting ham, San Rafael, Calif.; the bridegroom's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Card, Newjnan, .Calif. . Mr. and Mrs. Card spent their honeymoon at Reno, Nev., and have returned to live at 516 West ern avenue. The bride was grad uated from Medford High school and attended the University of Oregon, where she. was a mem ber of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Mr. Card, who attended school in Grand Rapids, Minn., is with Veneer Products company here. Andersons Hosts For Dinner Party Mr. and Mrs. Valentine An derson entertained Tuesday evening at a dinner at their home. Home cooked Swedish dishes were served. At the dinner were Mr. and Mrs. David Roberts, Mr. and Ora Meyers, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Walder, Mr. and Mrs. Baxter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hofbek and the hosts. to You! Bowmers Honored At Holiday Party Mr. and Mr. Angus Bowmer, who visited hr Medford for the holiday season, were honored guests at an annual New Year's eve party given by Mr. and Mrs. Almus Pruitt at their home. The Bowmers are living at Palo Alto, Calif., while Mr. Bowmer is at tending Stanford university studying toward his doctor's de gree. They were houseguests here of Mrs. Bowmer's aunt, Mrs. Fred Slagle, 103 South Holly street, and left Saturday for the south. Other guests at the Pruitt's party were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Werner and their son, Richard Werner, who was home visiting his parents from gorvallis where he attends Oregon State ollege Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Windt, Ashland, Richard Graham, Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Pelligrini, and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Hannan of Ashland. Mr. Graham had charge of the egg nogs served during the eve ning and the hosts also served a chafing dish supper of shrimp and chicken. Viennese 'pastry was furnished by Mrs. Pelle grini. Chamber music, sonatas and quartets were played during the evening and Mrs. Werner, a so prano, sang several selections. Richard Werner left today for Corvallis to return to his classes. Students Give New Year Dance Students of St. Mary's high school entertained at a New Year danc Thursday evening honoring their parents. About 70 parents and students attended the semiformal event which was held at the Pioneer room of the Jackson hotel. The Misses Mary Conroy, Ann Metz and Elizabeth Betschart were cochairman in charge of the dance and Belle Van Dyke and her orchestra furnished the music. Refreshment and punch were served duririg intermission. Decorations were in the New Year theme. Hawkins Return From Westlake- - Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Hawkins, 738 West 14th street, returned last week from Westlake, Ore., on Siltcoos lake, after attending a family reunion there during the holidays at the home of Mrs. Hawkins' sister, Mrs. Letta Sova, former Medford resident. Other family members and also former Medford residents who were there were Mr., and Mrs. William Saue and son,. Stephen, Sauer, Portland, Mrs. Oscar Warfield, with Mr. War field, Eugene, and Mrs. Frances Edwards, now of Salem. Mrs. Warfield is the former Charlotte Stewart Peebles and her marriage to Mr. Warfield was an event of last September. -4 Family Gathers At Home Here Cant, and Mrs. Robert W. ! Root and four children, Oak land0, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. Jjohn M. Root Jr., and two chil dren, Madras, Ore., were visi tors in the home of the Rev. and Mrs. John 'M. Root, 304 South Holly street, over the Christmas holiday. The Rev. Mr. Root is pastor of MpHfnrrt Free Methodist church. t Captain Root and family re turned to the United btates last June from a three-year tour of duty with the Armed Forces in Eurooe. He was stationed at Frankfort, Germany, and spent; two months 01 this time in Berlin. Littrells Return From California Mr. and Mrs. Al Littrell have returned to their home here aft er a vacation in Carmel, Calif., and at the home, of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Brainerd, in Petal uma, Calif. They spent Christ mas with-the Brainerds. While away Mr. and Mrs. Litt rell visited with Miss Charlotte Rogers, former Red Cross exe cutive at Camp White, and oth er members of the Rogers fam ily who live in the Bay area. . The Littrells will leave in the near future for Salem since Mr. Littrell , was named representa tive to the Oregon legislature from Jackson county during the last general election. Medford Couple Visits Daughter Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Murphy, Ross lane, returned last week from Berkeley, Calif., where they visited through the Christ mas holidays with their son-in-law an daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Hamlin, and Mr. Ham lin's mother, Mrs. Ina Hamlin. Mrs. Wallace Hamlin is the for mer Miss Marilyn Murphy. En route they also visited Sacramento,' Calif., and other cities. . Lady Elks Plan Luncheon, Cards Lady Elks plan a salad lunch eon and an afternoon of cards at the Elks club party lounge Tuesday, January 4, at 1:30 pjn. ' The serving committee will be Mrs. L. E. Juniper, Mrs. Vern Brophy and Mrs.- N. R. DeWitt. Wives of Elks club members are invited. New Year Parties Climax Gay The round of gay holiday events last week was climaxed by several parties New Year's eve and day. A number of these are annual ' events, held each year by Medford couples. The post-holiday week will be enlivened by the annual open house sponsored by the Women's Golf association of Rogue Val ley Country club, set for Sunday, January 9. Hours will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and the event is for members of the club only. Co-chairmen for "the event this year are Mrs. Frank Tam ney and Mrs. Loren Haugen. Mrs. Tamney and Mrs. Haugen will supervise general decora tions, and Mrs. Ward Samuelson and Mrs. Roger Clarke will take change of table decorations. Mrs. H. D. McClure is food ehairman and Mrs. Warren Lesseg, hospitality chairman. Mrs. A. Orin Schenck and Ray Frisbie will prepare the tradi tional Tom and Jerry drink served at this party. Members of WGA will serve, assisted by their husbands. . f Mr. and Mrs. Emil Mohr and Mr. and Mrs. Wilton White were hosts for a New Year's eve cock tail party at the Mohr's home, 39 Glen Oak court. About 30 couples attended. The holiday event is a traditional party for the two couples. Also an annual event was the open house held yesterday by Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Pringle, 601 North Modoc avenue between three and five o'clock. Last Sunday evening Drt and Mrs. B. L. Lageson were ijhosts for a cocktail and supper party at their home on Glen Oak court. About 30 guests attended. The Lageson s son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Vranizan and Mr. Vranizan's mother, Mrs. James Vranizzm Sr., were guesfs of the Lagesons for the holidays. Their younger daughter, Miss Margo Lageson, University of Washington stu dent, was also home for the holiday vacation and left -today for Seattle. Wednesday evening Mrs. Rich ard Payne entertained at a party which honored Mr. Payne on his birthday anniversary. Twenty couples were invited to the to the Payne home on Coker Butte road. Miss Tanya Trowbridge and her brother, Ben Trowbridge Jr., were hosts for an open house December 29, inviting a group of . friends to the Trowbridge home on East Main street. About 45 called between five and sev en o'clock. Miss Trowbridge is a student at Chico State college and her brother attends Stanford univer sity. Both left Saturday to re turn to their classes. Another party for students was one given December 28 by Miss Sylvia McCabe and her brother, Stephen McCabe, at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McCabe, 1909 East Main street. Among the guests was Hugh Coughlin, San Francisco, a San ta Clara university classmate of Stephen McCabe who . visited here during the holidays". The three young people went south to spend the New Year's week end in San .Francisco and Miss McCabe is returning to Seattle, Wash., today where she is a stu dent at Seattle university. Dr. and Mrs. J. Scott Heath erington, 12 Black Oak drive, entertained Friday evening at a New Year's eve watch party. The group gathered at the Heatherington home about 8:30 p. m., for a crab supper. Bridge was the diversion of the evening. At the party were houseguests of the couple, Dr. and Mrs. B. L. Burnham and daughter, Susan, of Oregon City, Mr. and Student Leaves Miss Marilyn Miller, daughter of Mayor and Mrs. Earl M.
