TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, December 30, 1954 Rogue River Club Seeking Magazine Coverage of Event Rogue River Officials of the Rogue River Boosters club are seeking coverage of the 1955 Rooster Crowing contest by a national pictorial magazine, ac cording to Frank Stamm, newly elected president. He said the group was cor responding with Life magazine to obtain coverage. Contact with the magazine was made for the 1954 contest, but too late for action, although consider able interest was shown, he said. The 1954 contest was covered by Fox Movietone newsreel for later showing as a newsreel fea ture. Third Annual Contest The 1955 contest will be the third such event staged at Rogue River. Tentative plans call for a new feature, the naming of a queen from Rogue River High school seniors. The winner will be awarded a $200 scholarship ' for educational purposes, Stamm added. It is planned to continue the free barbecue and there will be no entry fees for rooster entries in the contest, as in the past. A trophy will be presented the owner of the winning rooster. It will rotate from winner to winner each year. The 1954 trophy was given permanently to the city where the winner re sided. . Next meeting of the Boosters will be Jan. 11. Other new of ficers include Joe Telbic, vice- president; Peter Parr, treasurer, and Bob Gail, secretary. Order of Arrow Meets; Officers For 1955 Elected The annual meeting of Ma zama lodge, Order of the Arrow, was held here yesterday. Some 75 members from Jackson and Josephine counties in Oregon : and Siskiyou county in , Cali fornia attended. The order is for ' older Boy Scouts who have fulfilled cer tain requirements, including spe cified periods of camping. Craig Philips, a member of Explorer Post 8, Medford, presided as state lodge chief of the organiza tion. At the business meeting, held at 1:30 pjn. at St. Mark's Epis copal church, Philips charged the members attending with a life of cheerful service, both as scouts, and from now on. Officers Named Larry Hammond, Post 8, Med ford, was ' elected chief of the Mazama lodge,, succeeding Mike DeVore, Medford. Other new and retiring officers are Jim Ewing, Weed, assistant lodge chief, succeeding Theron Mid dleton, Jerome Prairie; Gary Kliever, Post 3, Medford, secre tary, succeeding Greg Milnes, Medford; and Mike Moore, Sea Scout Ship 7, Medford, treas urer, succeeding Dick Sweeney, Medford. In the evening, the group met at Kim's restaurant for dinner and installation of officers. George Flanagan, Boy Scout council camping chairman, spoke on how membership in the order of the arrow increases the individual member's respon sibility to the scouting program. Joy Urges Blockade Of Communist China - San Diego, Calif. (U.R) Adm. C. Turner Joy, USN, (Ret), today urged "serious consideration" be given to a blockade of Com munist China unless the 11 Americans held as spies are re leased. Joy told a Senate Internal Se curity subcommittee headed by Sen. William Jenner (R-Ind.). the Communists "clearly have brok en terms' of the Korean armis tice" by holding the men. Joy, who commanded naval forces in the Far East and was chief -United Nations negotiator at the Korean truce talks, said yesterday an armistice did not end the war against Communist in the Far East He said technically the block ade could be imposed as a proper and legal extension of the Kor ean conflict. The United Nations could impose such a blockade under authority of its charter, he said. (International) Brucellosis Control Program Explanation Scheduled at Meeting A meeting to explain the fed eral government's participation in control of brucellosis in cat tle will be held next Wednes day at 1:30 p. .m. in the county court chambers, according to W. B. Tucker, county extension agent. , Three state and federal spe cialists will meet with the coun ty court, five resident veterin arians and Jackson County Stockmen association represen tatives, to discuss the new pro gram and to enlist "active sup port for carrying out the nation al program to eradicate the dis ease," Tucker added. Disease Common The agent explained that the disease is common to all cloven hoof animals, with the bacteria transmitted to humans in the form of undulant fever. Ore gon law requires mandatory test ing of beef cattle only in coun ties where dairy cattle exceeds beef. .As there are more beef than dairy cattle in Jackson county, testing of beef cattle for the disease is voluntary, he continued. Under 'the federal program, the testing of beef cattle will be paid for by the government, pro viding the owner will dispose of all cattle found diseased. Tucker pointed out that it was to the owner's advantage to test the cattle for economic reasons as well as for health. The dis ease causes a reduction in the calf drop and future income, as well as a danger of spreading the fever. Specialists Due Visiting specialists at the meeting will include M. E. Knickerbocker, chief of the di vision of animal industry, Ore gon Department of Agriculture; Dr. K. J. Peterson, state veter inarian, and Dr. A. G. Beagle, veterinarian in charge of the U. S. Bureau' of brucellosis and tuberculosis eradication. Stockmen association repre sentatives to be present include Henry Owens, president; Herb Carlton, vice-president; James C. Miller Jr., director; Frank Preston, director, and W. L. Ste wart, member. Dogs May Eat Humans, Phys Chicago (U.R) Your dog may be better fed than you are. Dr. Anton J. Carlson, eminent University of Chicago physiolo gist, said this might be so even if the dog food doesn't contain all the vitamins and such listed on the label. Carlson said he doubts that all dog food lives up to its ad vertising. "But discounting the claims," he said, "well cared for dogs probably eat better than a lot of people." Eat Better Than Children Dr. N. R. Brewster, veterin arian who has charge of the uni versity's animal experimenta tion, said he sometimes has as many as 600 dogs under his care, and that "they probably eat bet ter than half the children in Chicago." He said it costs an average of 13 cents a day to. feed one of his dogs a well balanced diet. . Carlson said many dog owners know enough not to feed their pets cookies, cake and the like, "but then they eat the same stuff themselves." Carlson and Brewster said a great deal is known about the nutritional needs of man's best friend because of research done with dogs in seeking cures for human ailments. By the same token, much has been learned about human nutri tion from the study of dogs. Importance of Acids For example, scientists learned about the importance of amino acids from experiments with dogs who showed symptoms of protein deficiency. Another example is dexadrine, used in tablet form as a reduc ing aid. This first was found to be effective on dogs, Carlson and Brewster said. Better Than ioldgist Says Carlson said it was found that agene acted as a "nerve poison," and thafc its use was discontin ued. , Feeding dogs has become a $200,000,000 yearly business, according to industry sources, so maybe a dog's life isn't as bad after all. ' Law Waived To Aid Japanese Patient - Tokyo (U.R) The U.S. Attor ney General has waived immi gration laws so that a Japanese suffering from tuberculosis may go to the United States for treatment,- the U. S. Embassy an nounced today. The victim is Hiromoto Sonoy ama, 39, who has a wife and two children. Sonoyama will receive six months treatment at the City of Hope Medical Center in Durate, Calif. His trip is sponsored by the Japanese-American Commu nity Service group of Seattle. Americans Building Larger Residences Washington (U.R) Ameri cans built bigger . homes this year. Two-thirds of the non-farm, one-family homes started dur ing the first quarter of 1954 had three bedrooms or more, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. )A survey showed that in 15 metropolitan areas the 1954 house was about .five per cent larger than homes built in 1951. The bureau said its survey showed 1,140 square feet as the average floor area for all new non-farm, one-family houses..
